This hike is super stunning! Moderate climb near the mid point to the top of the giant for a crazyyyy stunning view across to Thunder Bay and the most massive cliff gorge ever

Very interesting trail. I walked the first 8 km but as everyone has already mentioned, most people just bike there. I uploaded pictures to help others plan their trip. At no point, I had to climb. Trail is well-maintained and stairs (a lot of stairs) will take you up to gorgeous views. I did see a lot of deers, rabbits and birds. You can make the trail as easy or as difficult as you want. The gorge was magnificent but I felt lightheaded near the cliffs. So I was able to get great pics and enjoy the view but there is no safety rails or anything like this, therefore, be careful! I would recommend starting the hike earlier in the morning to avoid crowds and connect with nature. It is a relatively difficult trail but if I was able to do it, everyone can. Just have plenty of water and don't rush. Enjoy!

perfect way to spend quality time with my son. bathrooms are closed due to restrictions. everyone we met on the trial was respectful of the 2 metre distance. trials were well maintained. good enough distance to not be over kill to the lions head & back.

Was an incredible trail! Both challenging and relaxing at times. The bay was awesome! Went hiking with three other people. Started at 9:45am, and the trail was great! Minimal mud in one spot, but that was about it!

Was blessed to hike this on a beautiful July day with no wind or clouds....can't wait to go back again. Absolutely beautiful trail. theres a few km of difficult scrambling up where you gain significant elevation, after that it becomes easy again

Best trail ever! So beautiful!

Make sure to bring a bike for the beginning portion. Beautiful views on the way up.

One of my favorite hikes thus far. There are so many things to see on the way up.

Definitely worth the hike to the top. Amazing views. First section is fairly monotonous and would recommend biking this part (there's bike racks available after this section).

Good hike. Kid and dog friendly. A little small rocky climb toward the end where the Sea Lion is, but very minor.

We did this hike in September 2019. Although rated a moderate hike I would rate it as difficult. The initial 4 miles out is mild to moderate with rolling terrain on a well groomed trail but the last mile up 1500 feet is extremely steep and technical. The stop at Sawyer bay and short hike along the shoreline were a nice change of scenery. Views from the top are outstanding and make the last difficult part worth it. In September we had absolutely no bug problems.

Great trail. Very steep at the top

This was a nice moderate trail that took us just under 7 hours to complete at a leisurely pace, with a few stops. Highly recommend walking the extra 0.9 km to the Gorge once you’ve reached the top. The view is exquisite (just don’t get too close to the edge)! The first 8 km from the parking lot are pretty flat and boring, so if you have the possibility, take your bike (though the trail is quite rocky, fair warning). Took us about the same amount going up to come down and overall was an enjoyable hike (with a few sore feet to remind us of the journey). :)

my dog and i did this one a rainy day hence why it was muddy. we walked the entire distance but highly recommend biking the first 6km, there is a bike lock up before entering the stairs. when you see the red sign saying trail closed due to rocks falling, etc, continue straight through. was a bit confused at that point. awesome view with friendly people throughout trail.

Trail great for all. Beautiful lookout of Lake Superior. Then walk down to Ravine lake.

excellent trail. nice view. worth it.

I did this hike with 5 friend. Had one roll their ankle a kilometre in, so he turned back. The trail is very rocky at points so it is best to wear good foot wear. As mentioned the 6km hike in is best done with a mountain bike. We foot slogged it. I highly suggest taking a peak at some of the openings to lake Superior before making your way to the trail head. These are some of the views you will be seeing from the top of the trail so it was nice to take it in from ground level first. Bring lots of water as there is very few areas to pump/filter water. The "climb" section was a good workout, one member of our party was a little slow with it and we waited in case anything happened to them. The views are defiantly worth the hike. The way down is significantly quicker. I'd avoid this trail if rain fall is heavy or has been recently. We hiked it on after a day of scattered rain and it was very manageable, but we could definitely see how navigating in very wet conditions could be hazardous.

After the relative easy flat beginning for about 6 km to get to the Sawyer Bay, the trail gets 'Extreme'. Straight up for 1.7km, covering elevation change of 1550 ft! Pretty view and the sense of accomplishment is worth the climb. The trail is lightly travelled, with really nice picnic stops on the Sawyer Bay.

Easy hike until the trail to the top where it gets quite steep at times. Bugs along the path were quite irritating. Great view at the top though. Took about 4 hours on foot with a few breaks.

I regretted not bringing bikes and riding as far as Sawyer Bay. This will save a lot of time. Very nice view at the top. I'd say the climb was a little more steep or difficult than Top of the Giant and Top of the Giant had more and better views but Head Trail still worth the hike. There is no place to pay at the main parking lot so make sure you pay at main office about 5k before the trail start. The hike is rated moderate but if you compare to many other hikes in this site that are rated moderate, I'd say it should be rated hard.

if you can bike from the parking lot to trail head - do it! Still a manageable hike but that 6k trail in/out is long to finish your day. The gorge is worth it no doubt though!
