Beautiful trail, the dog loved sniffing his way through all the bunny and deer tracks

Parts of the flood plain trail are overgrown but otherwise nice walk with the dogs. Bug spray is a must and double check yourself for ticks.

Hiking

Hiked 12 km of the Backus Woods trails starting from an access point on the 3rd Concession Road. The trail is well marked with trail maps at each intersection. There are many interpretive signs along the trails with detailed information of native plant species. An easy hike with a few muddy sections and a few inclines. The boardwalks and bridges are all in excellent repair. We only averaged 3.5km/hour because of all the reading we did. A bit buggy due to the wet June weather. Employ usual tick precautions. This hike is a hidden gem. Enjoy!

Super Carolinian forest on the Norfolk sand plain . Many interesting species that have been saved by the Weston Families efforts . There is a huge patch of Pokeweed in one clearing . The fruit look like grapes but very poisonous ,so watch the kids . There are many trails in this forest and you can get lost for a whole day . Yes ticks for sure . We wear proper combats with built in gaiters but if you are thinking shorts , forget it . This area was the first endemic Lyme disease area in Ontario/Canada . We were chased down the road by some local yockal once . He is lucky he didn't catch up with us . Got chased on a trail in Tillsonburg too . That guy took a swing at me , he's lucky I'm a nice guy ! Must something in the water in this area . If you can avoid the nuts this area is beautiful to the extreme ! K !

This was a excellently trail to ride my mountain bike but now they have gone and changed the gates and they made them difficult to pass through with your bike.

This is a relatively new section added to Backus Woods trail system. The first part is an open field being restored to a natural state. The second part enters in a forest that starts with a pine plantation before naturalizing. This looks to be slowly being removed for native species. Nature Conservancy Canada has been very active in this area. This trail butts up against some of the property that is available to hike but does not have any trails.

My least favorite of the Backus Woods trail system but still a nice hike. This hike comes out of the forest into an old field being restored to its previous natural state. It passes by an old farm pond and then through another field. There is some confusion on one piece of the trail that leads up to a private residence. The back end of the trail re-enters the forest and does offer some nice vistas especially in the fall. Because of the long grass and prairie type field there is a lot of ticks through this piece.

Nice little trail with signage that talks about the history of Backus Woods. Beautiful fall colours. Wide open easy trail with a few benches along the way. Watch for deer ticks.

Best trail of the forest, one of the lightest used, can be VERY muddy in early spring late fall. Watch for deer ticks.

Old growth forest, very wide and clean trails. Very scenic and relaxing. Only negative is LOTS of deer ticks in the height of the season. Check yourself and the dogs out afterwards.
