We were treated (according to the gift shop cashier) to one of the two totally clear days of the year – most of the time the East Quoddy Head light is shrouded in fog. There were porpoises, seals and Meinke whales out in the Bay of Fundy, where whale watchers were chasing the sights. We headed down to Herring Cove, where FDR played, sailed and picnicked during visits. It was a small smooth stone beach, with black sand, and we were the only ones there – it was beautiful. The waves would pick the smooth stones up and crash them down as the waves receded – a natural rock tumbler! A neighboring beach, Jasper Beach was smaller but the rocks were a bit bigger and glistened as the water covered them. One neat thing about Jasper is that it is only smooth stones and that means no sand between your toes.

The trail is located on Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada and part of Herring Cove Provincial Park. This is a wonderful spot to hike, with a beautiful and long crescent-shaped black sand beach. And after exploring, we ended our trip to Campobello with a special picnic by the beach!
