Best trails in Sheep River Provincial Park, Alberta, Canada

From the parking lot, walk past the outhouse. The trail starts to your right. Around 5-7 mins of walking, you will see a bridge. Cross the bridge, then turn left - don't go straight. First 1.5km (about 20mins) has a very wide trail. You will then see a huge muddy area, cross that area and not far from it, you will see cairns and an orange flagging to your right. It is a narrow trail and mostly flat at the 2nd km. Few meters past the 3rd km, the steepest part begins - you will have to worry about the descent, not ascent. This steep part is less than 1km. After a few meters, the trail has lots of tree logs blocking the trail - you have to hop on to them, and then there will be a clearing of trees/open area. Show more

You can park at Indian Oils day use area. Walk south from the parking lot and cross the bridge over the Sheep River. Continue to follow an old gravel road (approx. 4.5 km) to Dyson Creek and eventually to a nice waterfall. You will return the same way.Show more

Note: Highway 546 is closed annually from Dec 1 through May 14 west of the Sandy McNabb Campground which makes this trail inaccessible. Up and back, good trail with lots of flagging. Short hike with great reward in terms of views. The first half of the trail has a moderate incline until you hit the cow bone tree. At this point the incline increases all the way to the peak!Show more

This trail is a scramble/hike combination. The east part of the trail is along a fairly well defined trail, with the lower west 2/3rd being more of a scramble, with route finding required. Going up is probably easier to route find then going down, as you just climb up the ridge line. This trail also requires a short walk along highway 40. Expect this trail to have quite low traffic, with nice views at the top of Gunnery Mountain. The east trail is a nice walk through a low alpine meadow/valley. This hike is along the portion of highway 40 that closes in winter, so be aware of that. Better done more in the middle of the year than later due to snow accumulation.Show more
