HikingOff trail

River crossing and bush whacking. No discernible trail for most of hike. Very quiet considering the nearby campground but otherwise the trail is not developed and doesn’t lead to anywhere worth your time.

Good easy and gentle trail in a dry day. Would not recommend if rainy due to mud. We ran across LOTS of cattle and some horses as well.

HikingMuddy

Hiked up Foran Grade/Windy Point and Death Valley back. Got into a pickle when the trail was blocked by 40+ head of cattle and ended up having to bushwhack up the hill through the trees to keep a safe distance. Pretty muddy from the horses but gorgeous and easy once you get back to the Sandy McNabb trails area. Not a bad trail just not the best experience, I preferred Foran Grade/Windy point area.

Hiked up Foran Grade/Windy point and back Death valley in late July. Absolutely gorgeous views and very fragrant wild flowers (so bring your allergy meds) and if its a clear day you can spot Calgary from on top of the ridge. The trails get pretty muddy because of the horses and we did loose our way a bit in the meadows but over all fantastic hike!

The trailhead is across Sheep River from where you park. You cannot get to it without a boat.

So. Many. Horses. Avoid when muddy because the horses have made the ruts in the trail relentless. Lots of trails that horses aren't supposed to be on, but they are.

This was an adventure but worth a visit for sure. The trail before the creek crossing is popular and wide and leads to a nice little falls whose name I can’t seem to find anywhere. For the creek crossing, would recommend taking boots off, there was some enticing rocks and lots so I tried boots on and ended up with two soaked boots. The trail after the creek was muddy and rutted from horses, the first gps turn up the mountain is just bushwhacking and animal trails to the top but was very doable. The views from the top were gorgeous, as were the rock formations. And we didn’t see another soul after the creek crossing. We ran out of time and headed straight back down instead of doing spaulding point. Would definitely not recommend doing this one without gps as it really helps with finding the trail again after bushwhacking your way down.

I'd say this is more of an easy trail than moderate. My 4 year old walked the whole way. Lots of people on horses and I wouldnt recommend coming after rain. Huge muddy sections that you have to try and get around, but it was a beautiful walk thru the hills. We parked at the info centre and walked clockwise around, very gradual incline and descent down the other side. I would recommend going along the ridge tho if you are hoping for some views.

We did this hike on June 17th. This isn’t so much a hike as a nice stroll through the woods. Great for small kids and those with bad knees or anyone looking for a pretty walk. There were some nice wild flowers and lots of benches at look out points. There was a fair bit of mud on the trail but easy to navigate around it. Also, be sure to pack bug spray as the mosquitos were out in full force. Combining this with another easy trail in the area with a break for lunch in between makes a nice day outing with kids.

Parked at the ranger station, where we started out hike. Easy hike, but very muddy and lots of cow pies as there is cattle graving. I loved that the trail was well marked. There was a sign at every trail junction. If you are new to hiking, this is a bonus if you are nervous about getting lost. We did the hike then drove to Sheep River Falls. Nice picnic area and a short walk to see the falls from the parking lot. The falls are a very popular spot. Lots of people. We also stopped at a viewpoint, but cannot remember the name. It was a great place for pictures and to enjoy the view.

Below average hiking experience i hikes early may 2020 so it might get better but the trail is muddy 90% of the time. Unless you wear mud boots your feet and shoewear will be wet. I never found the last section of the trail meant to take me up the mountain. Views were average.

Out of Sandy McNab campground down coal creek. Over the falls and up the ridge to the right. Followed the ridge up to the top of mount McNab. Followed the ridge over to the McNab bluff and back down to the campground.
