good trail, wide and an easy hike to the lookout, a few steep parts, cleats for sure in the winter.

We parked at Surprise Corner. There is limited parking and we were lucky to get a spot. We took the Bow River Hoodoos trail to the Hoodoos viewpoint. It’s a lovely trail through the forest and along the river. There is a good uphill ascent at the end as you climb up from the river to the Hoodoos viewpoints on the ridge. We returned via the Tunnel Loop Hoodoo trail. It parallels Tunnel Mountain Road to the Douglas Fir Resort. There we came out on the road and then took a left on Tunnel Mountain Drive and walked back on that road (it’s closed to traffic). This part was not really worthwhile - I would recommend returning by the Bow River Hoodoos trail. Total trip time was 2.75 hours including the time spent viewing the Hoodoos.

HikingGreat!Off trailRocky

Superb views of the mountains, calm forest, river and several views point to stop and pictures time. Fairly easy hike, few hills, but nothing you cannot overcome at your own speed. If you do a loop, by surprise corner view point, you end up finishing - or starting - the trail along the side of a road and crossing Banff which wasn't great. We heard and saw some elk through the forest at the end of the hike.

Rock climbing

Well defined trail. Good elevation gain. Most of the larches have lost their needles but still lots have them. Some small creeks fill water if you need it. Got to parking lot 0730 for last spot.

Nature trips

The trail started more like a cement path for a while, we weren’t expecting that as well as the last 3 or so Km. It was nice nice quiet trail otherwise. We saw two deer and a bull elk! Overall a good hike, I wouldn’t recommend if it’s the only hike you do in Banff though

Tip: to avoid walking next to the road for half the hike, park at the Hoodoos viewpoint and then walk to and from Surprise Corner. Good mix of mountain views, quiet forest, and the river.

This is more of a walk, and part is beside a road which is a bummer. Anywhere else this would be 4 stars, but for Banff there is much better. I would suggest just getting to the Hoodoos than going on a better hike with more to see.

Well, this was extremely boring! On a service road the entire way up, no variation in terrain, nothing much to see until you get to the tourist attraction at the top. Not that it was easy - the constant, gradual incline will give you a good workout! The one positive is that because the trail is so boring you can easily jog the entire way back down if you do this as an out-and-back.

Nice trek with a little hidden beachy area you can get right down to the river. Dog loved that part so he could splash through it and cool down.

WalkingGreat!

Nice easy trail. More like a walk than a hike. You can however make it harder along the bow river side by taking some of the tracks closer to the cliff edge on the south side. I did this hike with my 5 month old pup and he had no issues. Not much shade on the eastern side so be warned if you go on a sunny day!
