Excellent hike! One of the best that I have done, but you have to plan for it. I would recommend about $140 cash to make this happen, although you can save money if you have a GOOD 4x4. I also highly recommend getting a guide. My guides were Ryan and Mika.

Ryan is a biologist, so when we were walking, he brought my attention to all sorts of exotic plants and wildlife. Mika is new to Kalu Yala but brings her experience from living in Equador on the Amazon River to help students and adventurers explore the habitat.

On the hike, we saw two different breeds of monkeys, poison dart frogs, and countless birds and insects.

At the Kalu Yala camp, I met some of the most thoughtful and interesting people who are like-minded with us outdoor types.

NOTE: Technically, you could do the hike for free with an excellent four-wheel drive, and moderate land navigation skills, but I do recommend the guide.

Recommended Packing List:
- x2 pairs of polyester/nylon socks (your feet get wet and stay wet)
- Good hiking shoes that dry quickly.
- Nylon/polyester pants
- Polyester shirt
- Swim trunks
- Reef or approach shoes for the waterfall.
- Camera ( I used my cellphone camera which worked fine)
- Snacks
- Water treatment or life straw (The hike lasts about 6 hours out and back, allowing time for pictures)

This is a steep but rewarding hike that begins and ends at Kalu Yala. At the top of Cerro Prominente, you can see the Pacific Ocean and Panama City on clear days. The jungle village at Kalu Yala has a hostel and an outfitter if you want to arrange a guided hike. Please look at the information on the following website prior to driving (4x4 REQUIRED!) to Kalu Yala to begin this hike.

This is my absolute favorite hike at Kalu Yala! Beware that this hike crosses a river many times, so rainy season flooding is a concern. Beautiful views of the valley below the whole way! Wear long pants or socks to protect from the grass, it’ll cut. Definitely worth the climb!

This is a great loop that can be done either in a day or an overnight. There is limited water (the only source during the uphill push is in the actual town of Altos de Pacora) so be sure to pack around 3L/person. Steep uphill but so rewarding. Check out Jessica's tienda, too, once in the town. It's more hidden than the traditional tienda stop but she'll make some great food and is really welcoming.

Not that interesting. Wouldn’t do it again it’s just a long path in the ocean.

The magical jaguar falls! A nice hike, not to hilly nor strenuous. However, it is wet. Around 17 river crossings means a lot of walking through water. Hiking down to the actual falls is super steep but fun if you have the right attitude. And the waterfall itself is gorgeous, refreshing and a great way to spend a hot day.

This hike was good for my soul. Challenging, but awesome. Love that this trail passes through an actual town. Makes for a nice change of scenery (hillside homes and children playing) and it's awesome to be able to stock up on mid-trek snacks and candy bars. This hike will leave you feeling tired but soo fulfilled.

Awesome trail with breathtaking views at the top. You have to do it on a clear day but if you do you can see both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Panama City, and both North and South America. Absolutely amazing

Wonderful hike. Strenuous but worth every minute. On clear days you can see both oceans from the city, Alto Pacora. There is a little shop that you can stop at there as well that has snacks and drinks. Would definitely recommend.
