Explore the most popular Nature Trips trails in Nicaragua with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

4 stars if hiking only, 5 stars if boarding. Went several years ago. The trail itself is fairly strenuous, but the heat is a bigger factor. The entire volcano is black pumice with no tree cover, bring water. What makes the experience unforgettable is boarding down the volcano- find a guide in León to take you, it isn't expensive. They'll provide the board and protective gear. No experience needed- it's sit-down sledding unless you specifically request otherwise. But it's sledding down an active volcano! You won't regret it!

Being from Colorado and an avid hiker I must admit this was one of the most challenging with the lack of trail markings but we went up from the Totoco lodge to the furthest east trail. A lot of mud and muck, small crevices to climb up in and lost of monkey climbing. Beautiful but definitely in the fog due to it being rainy season. Recommend good hiking boots, walking stick and plenty of agua and protein bars. It takes as long to come down as go up so take into consideration time. The sun sets this time of year around 1730 and you don’t want to get caught in the jungle after dark. Best to leave by 7am and plan to get back around 1600. This is not for the occasional walker or hiker you best be physically and mentally prepared. Enjoy!!!!!

A good hike in Ometepe. A nice walk up through trees and bush with a rewarding waterfall at the end. You will need to cross the stream a couple of times at the end to get to the waterfall.

Climbed Maderas on my 2nd time returning to Nicaragua June 2017 after having lived and worked in Granada for 4 months in 2016. Leaving the report now because i was goin thru pictures of it. First time around climbed Conception, which is the much bigger Volcano on Omtepe, and from all the online reviews Maderas seemed to be a lot shorter and had considerably less elevation gain so figured I’d do that one. MADERAS IS MUDDIER AT TIMES and MORE DIFFICULT THAN CONCEPTION. I’ve lived in Colorado/ Montana for my whole life and have climbed 26 14ers (14000 foot peaks) across the state, this mountain will challenge you mentally and physically to your limits. The mud makes progress excruciatingly slow and the trail is really over grown as you get towards the top. Also last 1.5 miles there is a fair amount of scrambling involved specifically on the final stretch down to the crater lake. Easy to get lost so definitely pay for a guide. What makes this climb so difficult in comparison to peaks in the continental USA is the almost unbearable heat/humidity during the first part of the climb and the unpredictable weather. If the trail was dry it would not be so tough. DO NOT BE FOOLED THIS CLIMB IS A BIG UNDERTAKING. Dont even think about it unless you’re in great physical shape and have experience with long distance hiking/ climbing. Remember it’s not like the US here, there’s no search and rescue coming for ya if you fuck up. That said, this was def one of the most rewarding peaks I’ve climbed although the view at the top is nothing compared to Conception the crater lake itself is f**king incredible and you can swim in it. Total time left at 6am summited crater lake around 1045-11. Spent 40 minutes at the top, arrived back at around 4PM. brought 5 liters of water and drank it ALL by the time we were halfway down. Good hunting my friends.

Amazing experience even though my wife and I didn’t make it to the top. We were totally unprepared. We started late in the morning and didn’t have the proper hiking boots or gear. Camel pack, hiking boots and hiking stick could be very helpful. I was caring a 30 pound back pack with Gatorade, water and cameras. Was wearing walking shoes. We still had the time of our lives enjoyed the jungle, monkeys and those insects that made a very loud noise. I think they are called chicharas. The trail is awesome! Steep in some areas, rocky, tree roots, tree trunks, and muddy but all manageable, you can either go under over or around obstacles. We will be returning to conquer Maderas.!

Best and only place in the world to go volcano boarding but the hike up is quite tough lots of big loose rocks. absolutely unforgettable

There were some tricky spots for footing in the rocks and a chain that you can hold for support only some of the way going up to the waterfall. Beautiful hike, you can hear the monkeys calling all over.

Much more difficult than the alltrails review. Definitely worth the challenge but don't be fooled, it's hard as hell. Mostly mud and monkey climbing so just be prepared, the way you go up is the same way back down. People with knee trouble might struggle.

Nice walk. Do not miss the butterfly park.

Great hike, but in my opinion it's more in the hard than moderate category. A guide is strongly recommended if only to see the animals. The view at the first view point is breathtaking. Unfortunately for us the rest was in the fog.

There are two ways to get to top, the one less traveled is much harder and require ropes for last leg of climb. Enjoyed the challenge.

Really is easy climb if you're in good physical condition. If you don't do exercise or moderate walking then it's difficult. Have done it several times, got down sliding & walking

Ferry ride over and a one hour drive to trail head. Remote spot with monkeys along the trail. Be sure to have plenty of water for the tropics conditions. Cool pond atop to cool off.

The hike up takes about an hour and then you can either board or run down the side!
