Did this track in Feb 2016 and bloody loved it. I choose to do it in three days but in hindsight would next time take the four days.

when it says this track is used heavily it sure is popular which makes booking essential but the beauty is you are on it with 40 or less people at a time.

I walked solo and had no-one near me through the day, but if you want company you can easily have it.

I based in TE Anau and drove up into MIlford sound two days before to have a good look around. Glad I did as I got in on the last day and it was getting dark.

This walk is beautiful and so is getting to and out of it. You won't ever regret it.

The track is safe and easy so you can Definatly do it solo and don't need to be guided.

The huts are second to none and are equipped with bed mats, gas for cooking, heating and water for washing up.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I have to confessed, we decide to do this hike because of "mount doom" and after completing it we were amazed with EVERYTHING. we did it around January 4-7, cant recall the exact day by now :/

We took a shuttle from our RV campground to Mangatepopo car park; and the same service pick us up at Ketetahi car park. (I think we used this one https://nationalparkshuttles.rezdy.com/190355/tongariro-alpine-crossing-return-transport-from-national-park-village-to-the-mangatepopo-car-park )
At the start it was misty and light rain, by the time we hit the real steep part it was foggy; we stay around 1h in the highest point, and when going down it was sunny.
Our shuttle pick us up around 9am, and we got the last shuttle back at 6pm. Took around 1h on the top and took a LOT of picture. we (I) are also slow pace hikers.

Is suppose to be very crowded, dunno if it was because there was storm in the area the day before (we had to re-schedule our trip to the area and stay in Taupo an extra day) but it never felt crowded.

Advice: Make sure you have rain jacket, do layers (I was wearing 1 t-shirt, 1 swearer, raining jacket; 1 legging and one water proof pant on top >> end up with leggings and t-shirt; swearer on and off)
We took 2L water each, but it was not as hot/humid so we consume less water than on previous hikes.
Good boots
DONT forget your camera :D

Enjoy

my home town pick

Exceptional Track ... I climbed on thw top of Mt Ngauruhoe during the winter 2010 and I m going this year in July once more ... Tongariro Alpine Crossing also top hike in the world!! Must to do !!

its easy and comfy walk.down to trainline walk that is my favorite

I have run up to the top of the Rapaki track several times. Good view looking from the top

Good track to run up but narrow and had to take care running up

pretty lake trail

Easy hike and stunning views of the harbour.
Slippery when wet down at the bottom walking up-hill through the bush, but push on through and especially once you get to the rock don't be put off by the steepness, use the chains and take your time, it is only a couple of minutes and the views are well worth the effort.

Do you love stairs? Great views. Lots of stairs. Picnic table at the lookout. Last 200 steps were snow covered so a good walking stick will serve you well in June.

Very picturesque track around uniquely shaped lake. Some very friendly ducks at the picnic area.

Lovely track, great views, interesting limestone formations. The side track (not sign posted) to a rocky outcrop is a must! Unfortunately mostly in shade in winter.

This walk is absolutely beautiful but it is no longer free. Best to check entry prices before making the trip

Easy walk with amazing views along the way. 3 bridge crossings.
