Best river trails in Whataroa, West Coast

Amazing hike to get a nice view of the glacier. 4 suspended bridges and tons of waterfalls. Can get quite slippery. Beautiful views along the way. A lot of rocks and roots along the trail which makes it more fun and keeps your mind going, the grade isn’t that bad. Pretty walk around the lake. When the water is really still everything is reflected beautifully. The trail is busy. A fairly pretty little rainforest trail with a chance for deer sightings. Culminates with a good lookout from a bridge over the rushing Callery River. Please note: There is a long term closure in place for both the Fox Glacier Valley access road and walking track due to landslide. This is a half day hike up the Fox Glacier in New Zealand; which is about 25 kilometers away from another, similar hiking option - the Franz Josef Glacier. The trail starts off in a really stunning river valley (more impressive than the valley that approaches the Franz Josef glacier) and eventually climbs up along side the glacier.  You will see stunning views of the valley from on top of the glacier as well as the surrounding mountains as well as numerous ice features. Show more
