really good walk! took me 1 hrs 30 mins to Arat lookout and 2 hrs 10 mins to Christmas lookout. Quite breathtaking but don't forget your warm clothes even if it's warm down below. It was pretty chilly at Xmas lookout. didn't need special shoes but would recommend hiking shoes! awesome hike!!!

Great views of the whole valley from above the tree line, for such a short hike. Only 20minutes or so walk. Good bang for your buck even if you're just driving through, its worth a quick stop.

Absolutely incredible walk through the woods- lots of tree roots to clamber up through. If it’s winter- stop at Christmas look out unless you have proper hiking ice gear!! It’s slippy and very icy further up and not worth it for the views in my opinion -If you’re going up to see the glacier anyway. Other than that an incredible walk- but don’t underestimate it. It’s not easy. We made it most the way up (1km short) in 3 hours and down in the same as it’s very steep. I’d class us as pretty fit, experienced hikers while walking at a decent pace and struggled at points.

Amazing views and easy trail. Altough the walk itself doesn't take 1 5 hour, with all the stops for taking pictures it will!!

Awesome trail! I loved doing this hike- I started at 7:45, got to the top 2 hours later and had the beautiful view all to myself!! Waking up early is always worth it. Nice variety of up and down, and different terrain which kept it technical and interesting. There was never a climb that made me think about giving up, so that’s nice haha! Really fun to hop around on a dry day, might be a different story after some rain.

Easy walk to the caves , you can make a loop and return to the car park or keep exploring the area. The walk is easy and really nice because of the thousands of birds. the main cave is pretty safe , you always have natural light inside but better to have a torch obviously. Glow worms. If you start exploring it from the first sign you will have a "steep" entrance to get inside so it's better to go down than to escape from here :). Really muddy path from the exit that make it fun. I would recommend it even for childrens (5 to 80 yo).

I'm giving it 4 stars for the hike I know it could have been, but for the love of God please do not attempt it on a rainy, cloudy or damp day, which I know is difficult in the Southern Alps. If you have a cloudless day, get your butt up here immediately. Otherwise, skip it. Do not hike it hoping the clouds will go away, you'll be disappointed. It also gets veryyyy slippery at the top so make sure it was relatively ry the day before.

This should be the very first hike you do! It's small and introductory to the rain forrest around you in the Southern Alps. Don't even both if you've already been to Franz Joseph because you'll be disappointed. It is completely surrounded by forrest (which is boring but some find "boring")and the views are not much but you see a bit of the glacier.

Easy and beautiful! If you can, go on a clear, sunny day and you'll be able to see gorgeous mirror reflections. I imagine it get quite crowded though, so maybe go early or later. You'll also find mirror-like views at Peters Pool in Franz Joseph!

Crazy to see where the glacier used to be and it is a nice easy trail, but its less then you'd expect. If you can handle an intense hike you must to Robert's trail (go on a nice, DRY day) to get so much closer to it!

Nice short, easy trail and depending on the weather you might even get a better mirror picture here than Lake Matheson. If you're a keen hiker and its a nice, dry day do yourself a favor and do Robert's track!! One of my favorites and the closest you'll get to the glacier without a helicopter tour.

Really easy trail. Unfortunately after Peter's Pool the road was blocked by a huge tree and impossible to continue. Still a nice view.

Only do this trail when it’s been dry the day before, which can be hard on the west coast I know! It’s all rocks and slippery and the last half hour is quite the climb but it’s AWESOME so much fun this was one of my favorite South Island tracks. Best view and closest view of the glacier you’ll get and the rainforest is beautiful. The bridges are really cool too
