This trail is perfect for intermediate hikers that are beginning to do overnight hikes. The Ces Clark hut is a cozy hut that can fit quite a lot of people and has a standard kitchen with basic equipment and a nice view overlooking the direction of the southern alps. I recommend going right over the track rather than back the same way if this is possible. Great West Coast walk.

Beautiful Trail. The trail starts in a river canyon with high rock walls and mixed palm trees, fern trees, and others. It makes the scenery with the river that the trail follows for quite a ways very cool. We only went up to the first hut because the rest of the track was closed. Still a great stay. It was the nicest hut I have stayed at n NZ.

What a track. 6.5 hard hours up, and then it lightly rained consistently for the day we stayed at the hot pools and most of our track back down, so it was like a mud bath after the Architecr Hut especially, and for the last hour or so of the track, about 6-6.5 hours down. Absolutely worth the views and worth it to continue just a bit beyond the Welcome Hut for some amazing sights. Hot pools were incredible and we are glad we booked 2 nights, you really need a full day up there to enjoy the area. Trail is rocky and a bit steep after the first hut, but it's really how muddy the trail gets after rain that's difficult to navigate.

1 June and frosty perfect blue conditions. Booked the old wardens quarters for $100 for the night - split between the four of us meant we only paid an extra $5 each. Amazing value for our lovely room with fire ace and hot shower and kitchen. The hot pools were perfection in the frosty clear conditions. No bugs in the winter either!! She’s a long walk to get in and out. And the trail is fairly rocky a lot of the way ... certainly not one of our ‘great walks’ but brilliant.

I'm glad this is listed as hard. I read that 75 year olds were easily able to handle this track and I thought how??? certainly not easy but beautiful beyond belief.

This trail was fantastic. The blue water of the river is amazing. Hiked it in mid-March and the rivers were running low which was helpful as there are some crossing that involve stepping from rock to rock. You will start the trail walking through the river as there is no bridge. We took off our shoes and socks and waded across. The trail is probably a bit more difficult right now due to the washouts. There is a bit of scrambling and climbing which makes the trail interesting. On our way out DOC had fixed some sections which made the return trip easier. We lucked at and were able to book the Sierra Room at Welcome Hut which was fantastic. We were able to load our packs with a nice dinner and leave our cooking equipment in the car as the Sierra Room has a complete kitchen, stove and utensils. The architect hut was a bit creepy, but if you HAD to stay there, you could. We found the hot pools far too hot.

A nice moderate hike with rewarding views of the mountains and beautiful hot springs to spend the afternoon / evening. Managed to get there in 5.45 and back 5 hrs. Some big wash outs/drop offs from landslides but otherwise very well signposted. An easy track.

Walking

Was a hard track for me. More tramping than walking. We dit it 1/2 march and i dont understand if i am very bad or is the track was completely destroy.. Maybe both aha. We did it in 8hours way and 9h back... Really worth the walk but be very carefull when you cross rivers, bridges (2 huges swing) and waterfalls. We dit it after 2 days of heavy rain so it was muddy and slippery. But you just have to wear good shoes and be focus and all good. Beautiful views but i Will Definitely not do that with a child.

Beautiful track, relatively well signposted. Nice bright shiny painted hut. Plenty of space for extra people if bunking an issue. Hot pools great and scenery top notch.

Beautiful track at intermediate level - no part is heavily challenging. At the moment, the track has been rerouted at the start due to washouts, but no biggie and clearly signposted. We did the first few creek crossings in jandals before switching to boots. The whole track was fun and adventurous, so should be fun with children that have some experience, too! At a hearty pace, we made it up in 05h45min and down in 05h15min, including generous breaks for foods, pictures, and change of shoes. If it takes longer than expected to Architect Creek, no worries - it is NOT the halfway point, but more like 2/3! Hit the pools after sunset to avoid sandflies and - pro tip - take a bottle of water into the pool so you can have a warm shower afterwards.

Did the Copland track with my girlfriend Cecylia. Both the trail and her are amazing. I love her (the trail). 5.5 hours on the way there and 6 back. Doable in 5 with no breaks and a faster pace. Hot springs are amazing

This trail was incredible! We went in July 28 and came out July 29. We did get rain overnight and the deepest river crossing (the first one you can see from the parking lot) was ankle-high going in and mid-shin coming out. The trail is beautiful and easy to follow. We saw a Tahr near the Welcome Hut. The hot pools have an amazing view! Five star trail without a doubt!

Impressive vistas, lush moss covering rocks and trees, water falls, streams, rivers and best of all natural hot pools at your destination. An easy going, hyper scenic trail, in my opinion, and one if the best I've walked in the SI, given all you see and get. It's marked as 'hard' but id disagree. It's very consistent and actually rather manicured. The heavy traffic it gets could be why it's so well formed. Even after a week of rain it was firm and dry. The time given is 7 hours for the 20km, but we did it in 5.5 at a pretty mild pace, a very generous lunch stop and much faffing. The bulk of the trail is under forest so will be cold in winter months, have layers at the ready. There are a lot of rivers and streams feeding into the main Copland river, so many bridges to cross along the way. We did the walk after a week of solid westcoast rain and still only had to make 2 'get your legs wet' river crossings. The first is actually at the very beginning in eye shot of the car park. We all strolled through in bare feet and booted up on the other side - handy tip maybe. The Welcome flats hut is pretty good, tidy and spacious. Classic bed mats in the dorms, drinkable water at the taps, generous kitchen space and flushing toilets with toilet paper! A huge attraction is the natural hot pools. They are really incredible, perfect temp with views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Make sure to pop in at night for a perfect view of the milky way, star gazing from hot pools was my highlight, can't beat that.

Hard! But then again we were first timers with 4 kids! Lucky we had a seasoned tramper with us. Great hut, hot pool totally worth it. The sign says 7km from the carpark.....
