One of the coolest hikes I’ve done. Did it in about 2.5 hours with 20 wk pregnant spouse. Took lots of rests on the way up. There were some areas where we had to scramble up tree root steps, and we were lucky it was dry or we wouldn’t have been able to make it up. Very neat mine shaft. A bit spooky and pretty neat to turn off the flashlights 3/4th through and see a few glow worms. We did it in the afternoon and there was quite a bit of sun and little shade in the first mile, which is all uphill. Downhill through the forest is beautiful, but again, we would have been in trouble had it been wet given how steep it was in some places. Saw two other couples out on a weekday afternoon, otherwise it felt quite remote. Had someone else come through the mine shaft at the same time as us, I probably would have been terrified. Trail is marked. When you get to Puketui Valley car park (just past the campground which will be on your left), park and walk through the boot cleaning station. Walk down and on your right turn into the little trail to see a pretty waterfall and pool. Then go back and continue forward across the foot bridge and take the first trail up going to the right marked Main Range Track. This will be your initial climb for a mile. Take Collins drive track when you get to the next signpost to get to the mine shaft. We took the water race track return (there is a sign) to the path by the river/car park. I think Water Race Track might be a little more steep than if you return via the Third Branch Track (which looks longer on the map).

Cathedral Cove is a must visit while in NZ. Trail is paved with stairs at some points but well worth the hike in as this is an amazing beach! Family friendly but there are sections of stairs, competed this with a 5 and 7 year old and they made it through ok.

super rando avec de magnifiques paysages. Pistes bien entretenues et bien signalées. Faisable en 5-6h avec la pause repas (a la hutte ou au sommet) et les arrêts photos. beaucoup d'escaliers, quelques ponts suspendus et échelles.

Great trail and almost all paved. There is quite a bit of up and down, and a ton of stairs at the very end so those with knee issues should beware. I recommend starting from Hahei Beach rather than either of the car parks (one at the top of the hill where the restrooms and info center are, and another on up). Just past the trailhead, if you continue on the shore, there is an old rope swing, too, that you can see from the hillside. The info center was a good stop if coming from the beach because there is shade, restrooms, and food/ice cream trucks. This is also where the public transit has a stop. We added on the detours to Horse Leg and Stingray coves so we had more elevation and length than indicated here. Stingray specifically was awesome. Just as pretty as Cathedral Cove but much, much less crowded. The beach is quite a bit rockier here, though so just a heads’ up. Spent half a day just exploring this loop, and also saw a sign for an additional trail that I wish we had the time to check out (can’t remember the name right now but I will update if I find it).

I’d rate this as medium. It’s paved but is very hilly and some people in my group struggled with the inclines. Beautiful sand beach to hang out at and the cove had clear water. Expect to see a lot people as it’s a tourist destination. Wear shoes for the walk, and if it’s too hard for the return trek, there is a water taxi to take back which was a flat $15 to/from Hahei beach.

Great hike! A bit more steep than we expected but worth it. It’s about a mile straight up and you have the option at the top to go another 5 minutes to a lookout for great views. The old mining tunnel is dark- make sure to have a light of some sort for that part. Highly recommend!

Beautiful walk along the coast and down the Cathedral Cove! If you are looking for free parking beforehand (if needed) there is a free carpark at the start of the town on the right, just a short walk to the start of this walk and the township.

Great walk for a day trip or to camp up top. The track is well maintained and it is a pretty easy walk too. Be sure to take care when up at the viewpoint if it's raining. You'll have to climb up a few metal ladders so can get sloppy.

Great trail a bit crowded in spots due to holiday traffic, was windy overcast and rainy so the views were limited. Was a great trail to be fair

Great hike - well maintained trail. Definitely steep and rocky in areas especially up from the hut to the pinnacles. Small platform only at the top so don’t plan to stay too long. Also quite cold so bring a warm jacket. The hut was great but bring a warm sleeping bag!

Beautiful sights but often very busy. Best to go early in the morning. Quite a big hill to get back up at the end - there is a water taxi if swells are low that may be an option. Parking is tricky. Plan on taking the shuttle

Amazing hike and stay at the hut - make sure to book especially in summer! It’s hard but worth every drop of sweat!

Super nice trail. All paved and with stairs. Not accessible to those in wheelchairs. At the very least, wear tennis shoes. I wore hiking boots and have no regrets. Humidity is high. Wear sunscreen because the sun is very intense in New Zealand (less ozone to block the UV light vs the Northern Hemisphere). Bring water too because once you start on the trail, there’s no water fountains or shops. I parked at Hahei for free and took the shuttle bus for about $3.50 USD round trip.

Nice paved trail to the cove, a pretty easy walk. Lots of people around noon quite touristy. Careful to park in the parking lot at the entry of the town do not follow the map to the head of the trail because there is no parking there.

Great hike! Especially the last section before the Pinnacles. Amazing views. I did it clockwise with the river crossing at the end. It was passable without problems. During or after heavy rain it might be impossible.

Excellent but not easy

Difficult hike to the top, well worth it for that front row seat for sunrise.

I went pretty early on so it was quieter completely kid friendly (I took a 4 year old) although there were some parts that were a little too much for him (stairs and hills at the end) and I had to carry him the cove was amazing and a great place to stop, get photos and relax for a while after the walk

Very good trail and pretty easy walk with great views of the valley along the climb. Once you reach the pinnacles hut (2.5 hours) you can rest a little and head up to the peak. Lots of stairs to get to the top and then climbing up metal ladders - take care when doing this part. So worth it with the views of the forest and coast at the top!

This one I did many years back before AllTrails existed. I was young and crazy enough to do this jet-lagged after a 12 hour flight. I was dead tired at the end, but the view at the top was worth the challenge.
