Perfect trail for a day walk. The view from the top is stunning.

We did the Cookson Kauri Trail, and spent total 3 and half hours. We are family of four, the kids are age 8 and 10. We found this trail was fun. We took lots of stopovers. The first half is along a river and second half has lots of steps. We recommend to trail to everyone.

We did the 6km Cookson Kauri hike. The track has been recently gravelled and was dry and made for good walking conditions There are A LOT of steps on this trail over 260 m elevation gain. Steps are all gravel and wooden frames. It’s a good track. Moderate to Hard difficulty. Took 85 minutes out and back.

Great walk. Took a good few hours with the kids.

The North Road end of the of the track is in good condition and relatively easy to follow. The Ohinewai Rd end of the track has become seriously overgrown with numerous tree falls, and obscured track markers. That end of the track doesn't appear to be maintained and looked little used. We frequently lost the the track and had to use GPS Topomap apps to refind it. The recommended time for the track is 8 hours but we are a fairly fit bunch and normally do it in 6 hours. This time it took us over 8 hours. We've advised DOC Waikato of what we found, and don't intend to do this route again until we get confirmation that it is safer to use.
