I did go counterclockwise on this track, but it was very remote, muddy and overgrown. Several times I had to search for the next set of orange trail markers so I could make sure I was still on the path. That was the nice thing about it. Orange trail markers for most of the confusing parts. But definitely really rugged and makes you feel like you might be covered in spiders. The first 5km from counter clockwise was great. But all the rest was really meh. You couldn’t see the lake you were walking around and the path generally sucked

The North Road end of the of the track is in good condition and relatively easy to follow. The Ohinewai Rd end of the track has become seriously overgrown with numerous tree falls, and obscured track markers. That end of the track doesn't appear to be maintained and looked little used. We frequently lost the the track and had to use GPS Topomap apps to refind it. The recommended time for the track is 8 hours but we are a fairly fit bunch and normally do it in 6 hours. This time it took us over 8 hours. We've advised DOC Waikato of what we found, and don't intend to do this route again until we get confirmation that it is safer to use.

Great stuff. Short but challenging hike with some ladder and chain usage toward the end. The view at the top is stunning, we stayed for about an hour.
