What an insane walk would say that day 1 was the hardest just because there’s a few landslide type areas to cross but other than that super tidy and well maintained track it’s clearly marked the whole way. Well worth going to the yarn for sunset and sunrise if your staying overnight.

We walked this track after torrential rain fall over a few days and was still drizzling when we went. The walk up was through a constant stream so dodging left and eighth up avoid getting soaked. On the return down hill via the crusher etc it was very enjoyable and Better yet the kids loved it! Felt like a great forest walk!! Grade level easy!

Highly recommend starting off early to make the sunrise - incredible

Really nice hike! Took me about 7 1/2 hours, plus lunch break. Started at sunrise which was amazing - the golden hour lit up the path. The track was well maintained with beautiful views along the way. There were some muddy bits even though it hadn’t rained, good hiking boots are a must. Also due to the landslides there are some rocky bits but it’s a nice change. And all well marked. Overall really versatile track with great views and lots of alone time to clear your mind. It’s worth waiting for a good weather day to do this one. Would not recommend after rainfall as you cross several river beds which can fill up quickly. For the first four hours I met no other hiker, super quiet track. That was great! After passing holly hut it got continuously more visited. Pouakai Hut is very popular and many people come up from Mangorei RD just to go the Tarns and back down.

Beautiful walk, lots of stairs on the ascent but well set out & spaced. Well worth the extra 10mins to the Lookout on the Holly's Hut trail. Interesting range of vegetation and intriguing trail on the descent. A bit of clambering but safe and manageable.

I remember climbing Mt.Egmont back in 1985 as part of a school trip. Two bus loads of teens going for a hike to the summit. I'll never forget the experience. Have always wanted to do it again. Yes, I can remember those stairs. I don't really remember the scree though. But I also remember we didn't all have proper clothing for such a wet and cold summit. :-) It was clear at the top with such a magnificent view. But it was cold and we were damp/wet from the climb through the cloud. I don't remember it being awfully tiring but it was a long haul up for sure. Been thinking to take my children up there. But, perhaps, after reading the other posts, maybe they aren't quite old enough just yet and maybe I am getting too old!! haha...

Really enjoyed this hike. We started at the Stratford Mountain House and walked across to the Waingongoro Hutt via a few stream crossings and amazing swing bridge. Had a bite to eat whilst enjoying the beautiful weather on outdoor seating at hutt. We then made our way up and then along the ridge to the plateau/carpark. The downward hike through enchanted forest is a little rough and overgrown at times with huge hollowed-out steps, but added to the adventure. Would definitely do again!

A great walk with all the old quarry sights to observe. Nice steady incline, little rocky in parts but our 3 and 4 year olds coped fine. Took us 2hrs 30min. While it would make it longer I'd personally go up and down the southern side of the loop as the northern is just a straight line through bush with nothing interesting.

One of the most amazing hikes ever, long, challenging and with lots of changes in terrain. Get to the peak - it’s worth it. Start at North Egmont visitor center though, not sure why this has you starting else where.

I walked this as an alternate to some of the Mount Taranaki trails as weather conditions on the mountain were so poor. I recommend walking clockwise so you can read all the historic signs. Make sure to take the various short side trails. At the suspension bridge you can continue on the loop or turn around. If you continue it is a bit rocky in places.

A perilous hike that is worth every moment. To reach the summit theres sections of steep stairs, scree and boulders to climb. Amazing views right from the get go. Be prepared for what feels like a never ending descent. It will feel like the biggest challenge as your body will be tired. The descent requires much more caution.
