Explore the best river trails in New Zealand with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Well, if you want a challenging hike, you found it here! Due to the climate of this region, expect this trail to be very wet - several mud bogs to cross over, plus slippery roots and four creek crossings (with slippery rocks). You can see some amazing flora and fauna here, particularly birdlife. Give yourself plenty of time: the sign posted at the trailhead is full of lies (2 hours one way is optimistic). As much as it was a challenge, it was one of the most memorable hikes I've done. Bring spare socks to stay dry!

Beautiful springs. Easy walk.

It's a busy hike from the parking lot, with many tour buses crowding the spots. Still, the trail is very well maintained for how often it erodes according to the meticulous trail management New Zealand is known for. A worthwhile jaunt on your way along the west coast.

Amazingly beautiful river. Take a boat ride if you can.

Pretty cool.
Went on a real overcast day, so it was difficult to see the glacier.
One steep incline, we just missed a rock slide by a few hours!

We did this track in the middle of winter and although it was quite muddy in places it was definitely still doable. The track begins as flat and well-maintained next to the river for about 20minutes then takes a steep incline up into the bush. For the next 45-60minutes it's more of just a route that weaves through the bush then eventually back down to the river again. Hiking boots are a must in winter and dress warmly because it's on the sunless side of the hill the whole way so can get chilly. There is a clearing at the end of the track, perfect for a picnic lunch or a dip in the river if you're game.

The glacier has sensibly retreated compared to most photos on the internet. The track ends quite far away from the terminal face. Overall good views on the way of the upper section and beautiful waterfalls. Easy, fits also families, no wheelchairs.

This ones quite a challenge but well worth it for the 360 views of the lakes and mountains. Not much shelter on the way up and can get pretty windy, take a windbreaker jacket for sure! Well worth it

Wow kepler, probably deserves an ode but a mere review will have to suffice. Spectacular scenery from lakeside to fern filled forests and gnarly trees growing sideways out of the hillside to sweeping views of valleys and lakes with clouds rolling in and out like the tide. With good weather the views cannot be beat. The sleeping huts make your pack lighter. This trek is a must do!

Great ash hike, a bit steep going down but it's short. Beautiful waterfall at the end.
