Amazing views, a bit muddy in winter even on a sunny day... however TOTALLY worth it!

Love this track! Well maintained, beautiful views and lots of lovely native bush and birds. Due to the number of stairs I would rate it as moderate, not easy.

A short trail along an exceptionally tumultuous river and numerous waterfalls. People can frequently be spotted in organised tours floating by in yellow rafts.

Easy walk to (near) the base of the glacier. The track is really well maintained and great to walk on. If you're only stopping by in Franz Josef thus is a good little out and back walk to do.

Hiked the first part up to the end of the treeline back in February. Easily the most stunning place I've ever been. The forest is incredibly lush and the trails are well maintained. It helps to have waterproof boots during the rainy season as mud does accumulate quite a bit. Once you get past the treeline prepare to be amazed with stunning views of the surrounding snowcapped mountains and lake below. I will definitely be back to complete the loop when I'm outfitted with enough gear.

One of the most challenging but fun hikes I’ve ever done!! 110% recommend taking your partner and seeing how long you can last

I did this track in one day !
the first part is lovely.
After that was snowing so WE couldn't see much

Anyway it's a really nice track to do, but you should do it during the great season (Oct/Apr).

A safe, easy short walk with excellent views. Take a torch.

Cave stream is a water based cave walk. There are some waterfalls that can be difficult to climb if you’re alone. Stay safe and check for recent rain to ensure water levels aren’t too high/currents aren’t too strong.

It takes approximately an hour of wading through water. Usually the deepest point is ~1.3m, most of the cave is only 0.5m deep though.

Great views, amazing blue Cristal clear water

Great spot, only a short 15-20min walk. The track/carpark are getting a big upgrade this year, the track will soon have two more swingbridges and become an optional hour long loop in addition to the current track.

nice easy hike that runs past the falls and then cuts in front of the falls along a walk bridge at the base. taking the trail further you walk along the river and then into a Kauri forest where you can see a few very large Kauri trees. overall, it is a nice hike and quite easy.

Nice easy, some inclines, hike. The falls are very pretty. the hike beyond the falls follows the river and meanders through the bush.

Lovely short walk on a calm day, great bird wildlife seen around the lake like friendly silvereyes and purple swamphens. Liked the info signs about the trees too! Kiwis keep their tracks so well maintained, it’s incredible!

The lake is nice but the walk is crowded and nothing special. If you go in the morning then just before you get to the lake there's a great view of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, I saw the sun glimmering through the crowds and it was incredible.

Wide trail accommodated a steady stream of visitors w/o delays.

Super quick trail though watch out for the bugs at the end! No need for hiking gear. All in all about 20 Minutes back and forth not including time taken for photos!!

Challenging with a 360’ reward

Not too challenging, but worth the beautiful falls and fast moving river. As a tourist (United States) this was a nice, easy & fun hike!

Beautiful walk and can be combined with the Windows Walk/loop. The walk follows the gorge most of the way, with a large tunnel towards the end. Some good swimming holes and river access in many places. Take a torch and wear good footwear as there are some dangerous pieces of steel sticking up in a few places.

TAKE A TORCH! Really enjoyable walk with lots to see along the way. Great views into the gorge and found it much better than the rail tunnel walk. If you have time, I recommend walking further up the gorge past the window walk. Around 30 mins will take you to another big tunnel and a swimming hole. There is also a full flow of water from a tunnel near the aforementioned tunnel. Then return and complete the Window Loop.

After doing the MateMateaonga 3 day trek, we were picked up on the Whanganui river by one of the jet boats. They took us up to the Bridge to No-where were we hiked, had lunch, and back down the river to Pikiriki. I wish I could have added the Matemateaonga track to AllTrails as it was a great hike.

Only wish we had time to do whole track

Easy surface and trail through varying vegetation and along river bed with a great though distant view of the glacier.

There was a huge parking lot but was full of cars. Had to wait for parking spots to open before being allowed to drive in and park. Hike started out with a little bit of rain and then it started pouring rain. Gave the hike 5 stars because the trail is well maintained and the description was perfect. The glacier is worth checking out if you have the time and the right weather.

I loved the hike along the top (once I got there!) along the ridge. Beautiful views...you feel like you’re on top of the world. Side hikes to the cave and waterfall are a must!

Great views.
