A nice trail with a great view on a clear day. I did this trek clockwise so I went left at the fork (as suggested) but the trail up was a single track with overgrown bushes, a lot of them were prickly. The path down on the other hand was wide and clear.. so much easier! I would recommend you go right at the fork and come back the same way. Lots of shade for a hot day.

Shady, easy walk with nice views

Track condition was average. Stunning views at the lookout

great walk under cover most of the way

Jolie randonnée en majorité à l'abri des arbres, donc un bon plan en cas de canicule, même c'est plus exposé au sommet.

Perfect day for a hike. Not too hot. Trail in good condition.

awesome tunnel it's longer than it looks once inside. make sure to take a head lamp. this is shared tunnel with cycling and walkers so can get very busy during peak season.

Anti clock wise is the way to go

Huge amount to do in this area. Dont miss the 'windows' walk through old gold mining tunnels and explore the stamping battery site just a few hundred meters off the highway over the new swing bridge.

All our family is abroad, so we decided to hike and have a picnic up top this route on Christmas day! Amazing views, an excellent workout. Not as hard as we expected, and waaaaay more traffic than we expected. We opted to start at paekikariki and hike back to pukerua, and I think we took the easy way....lots of stairs! Definitely will do it again, but in reverse!

Very nice trail - the tunnel was great! Lots of other trails close by to combine this with. Easy walk

very cool walk to do with kids. loved it.

Not too congested on a Tuesday afternoon. Definitely recommend Pukerua Bay to Pakaek route for more of a challenge. Can get pretty windy and exposed. Clocked it in 1 hour 45, going at a non stop pace, but can also be a leisurely scenic walk, depending on what you're after. Beautiful and rewarding as always

Easy walk! Kid friendly and bikes allowed! Don’t need a torch as there is small lamps all the way threw the tunnel now.

Blue route

good track. a little harder than "moderate"if you are not that fit OR not used to hill walking. watch out for mountain bikers.

The best way to the trail pleasantly is to start from Paekakariki Train station, there are plenty of free car park at the station. The climb from her is only a quarter amount if you start at Pukareo Bay. Take your time and enjoy the amazing scenery. We started our walk at 12 noon in 19th of September, it took us 4.5 hrs comfortably with so many stops and photo taking. Take the 2 steps down contentiously and stop to stop the shakes on your knee and enjoy the highs. As you finish the track stay on the left side of the train track and follow the sign to train station which is about 8 mins walk at Pukoreo Bay back to Paekakariki station for $4 per person. Will highly recommend this track everyone able. The key is take your time, 1litre of water a chocolate, sandwiches and a fruit is more than enough.

Beat part of trail is closed. The open part is just a bunch of steep stairs and a return. Meh.

I didn’t take the advice and did the trail anticlockwise without issues - I can see how it would get tricky in wet conditions though. The views from the top are stunning and it wasn’t a busy track at all (I only saw people at the top). It loses a point because a lot of the track felt like I was walking on a dirt road which was a bit boring at times, and there’s no view until you get to the top. Definitely suitable for kids

A great ride from the Kaitoki carpark to the Summit tunnel - easy gradient. Unfortunately the wind got up and part of the downhill leg required the same gearing as the uphill leg.

lovely easy walk

Great condition. Track partly closed for maintenance but still a good walk for the time we had.

Ignore my recorded map - my phone died just after we reached the summit! Really great off-the-beaten trail - we only encountered 5 other people. Super, panoramic views from the summit - well worth the extra 600m. The track was especially slippery on the clay areas of the descending section of the loop (it had rained for two days prior), yet I still recommend completing the trail clockwise as the ascent of the loop (before the little side trail to the summit) is especially narrow & steep.

Amazing hike, stayed in the hut and hiked up to the pinnacles for sunrise - the most stunning view!

Super easy trail suitable for all ages - a great taster of NZ bush & history. Easy return day trip from Auckland, Tauranga & surrounding areas.
