Absolutely amazing views from the bottom to the top! We did it with a toddler in a hiking carrier and found it particularly difficult once we hit the ice...yes, there’s ice, and a lot of it towards the peak! It does get very slippery and I even sat down and slid down part of the descent because it was safer than walking! I’d recommend taking poles and to have some hiking/trekking experience behind you. It gets icy cold at the top and this made it painful for our almost 2 year old daughter so we quickly turned back to warm her up, but it’s definitely achievable (albeit hard) with a small child and well worth the effort.

Awesome trail all the way around. Beautiful views all the way up of one side of the isthmus and a spectacular view of the other side from the top! Seriously, just stunning views. Had a decent amount of people but never felt crowded. 2 parking lots left us plenty of room to find a spot for a big ‘ol camper van.

This trail would be one of the best places for the sunrise around Wanaka and Hawea :)) Although I was too late to get the sunrise from the top, I had a wonderful one on the way to summit since most of the area is opened for its stunning scenery. It took me approximately 4.5 hours for all the way excluding break and lunch time. About 2.5 hours to get to the top if you just keep going. In my case, I spread additional half-hour for taking pictures of sunrise, deer??, fluffy sheep and of course lakes and mountains. And 2 hours to get back. So it's better plan to start hiking 3 hours before the sunrise time, if you want to catch it from the summit. There are some muddy points by the melting frost or small streams. So I would suggest you to wear water resistance/proof hiking shoes. Or do hike in the early morning. Then the ground could be still firm enough to step on. At last, due to the quite steep trail, a pair of trekking pole would be very helpful if you have one!! I really liked this hiking. I would love to try it again.

beautiful views all the way down. the stars were incredible on the way up for sunrise. even saw a few shooting stars! would highly recommend as it wasn't crowded and had incredible views at the top

Excellent track, very well marked, the demand is moderate. There are parts with stairs and others where you spend in water and mud, you have to have good shoes, the view at the top has no name is very nice. I totally recommend it,

cool trail with nice track. prefer to start with the east track and go down with the west track. tracks are wet and more easy in that order. west track is not in good "heath" at some parts. hard to climb. beautifull view on wanaka lake and on the cliffs all around. 360° view at the top. wonderfull with sunny weather.

moderate track. not hard. to do early to get the sun on the glacier. past 1pm it's aboveand little bit behind the cliff so... pictures hard to do facile the sun. nice point of view and nice walk beside the waterrace.

Nice view on the lake, we did it a little bit before sunset so everything was in the shades. I wish we went a little bit sooner to have the sun on the diamond lake.

Beautiful trek, sunny and clear. The trail is easy, going up at first but in a gentle way. You're almost in the shade of the forest all the time. We started early so it was almost empty but on our way down it was getting really crowded...

Definitely gets steep on both the left and right way up.

Super great track!! We got a perfect day, sunny and 17 degrees C in mid April. Trail was moderately busy but everyone we saw was in good spirits. Generally a pretty decently easy track but the first half of the way in can get you a little tired, but definitely one of the easier hikes I have done in NZ. absolutely breathtaking views at the beginning and end of the trail, the glacier was amazing! The cows at the car park and beginning of the trail were super cute as well. Disappointed we didn’t see any kea but still a 10/10 hike!!!

From the road the trail is narrow with few steep parts, although here is a spot or two that’s quite steep and rocky. The trail does pass through private property, which is fine as long as you stick to the trail: be prepared to walk over a couple fences. The rest of the trail is wide and steep all the way up the mountain with beautiful views over the lake all the way up. The top has incredible 360° views of the two lakes. Absolutely recommend!! In terms of how much scenery you get, this is definitely one of the best hikes around.

Great climb up...take the right way all the way up to the summit and then the other side down! More safe this way with kids...steep cliffs, rocky and muddy! Way down much easier on the other side! View from the top is amazing! Worth the climb!

Beautiful hike. Great views the whole way up, heaps of deer and sheep to photograph too. Took me 1hr 45mins to climb going pretty hard, 1hr 15mins to come back down. This is jogging speed so add a bit if you're walking. Chilly at the top so take a windproof jacket!

Was a beautiful day. We hiked this trail in early April and the weather was fabulous. We are not the quickest hikers but made it to the top in a couple of hours. Veiws were well worth the effort. Make sure to dress in layers as the bottom of the trail is under cover and was cool but as we climbed needed to peel off some layers.

Beautiful hike. A most in the south island. The ride over is not easy with a large car(sleeps 5). Crossing the fords is recommended with a 4wd or a high car. Especially 48 hours after it rained. The hike have 2 extensions. I tried both. Theshort one is a nicer view point. It is very tight as not many people go there. The longer one is right next to the information stands on the upper view point. Its recommend to do it with another person.

Beautiful stunning glacier scenery at the upper outlook. Well worth the efforts. :)

Amazing hike! Tough at moments, but sooo worth it at the top. 3 h up and 2 h down, but we carried quite heavy backpacks. Good to bring lots of water tho!

Nice hike just 15 minutes down the road from Wanaka. Great views almost the whole time, except for maybe a short bit when you are in the forest climbing up from the small lake. Right after you reach the lake, there is a long stretch of steps. If you go all the way to the top of Rocky Hill, you will get especially panoramic views. Today, there were just a few slightly wet/muddy slippery spots which required special care. Quite a few people on the trail by noon, including a veritable herd of folks who were part of a guided group. This is a good hike to get some of the sense of accomplishment you would get with Roy's or Isthmus peaks, in less than half the distance and elevation gain.

It's hard going up and not that easy coming down, but as everyone else says, the views all the way up are great and the views at the top are the best I have ever seen. Even just the drive from Wanaka to the trailhead along Lake Hawea is worth it. Didn't see any deer, but plenty of sheep (just like on the hike to Roy's Peak, and maybe all hikes in New Zealand where there is any grass at all).

Pretty neat view for sunset. Great views on the way up but the track itself is unexciting.

I did this trail today with my parents (both in their late 50s). We took the “shorter” trail opting for the Lake Wanaka lookout and turning back as opposed to the full loop. It was perfect and I would have liked to do this full thing. He trail was very well kept and easy to follow. The views along the way to Diamond Lake (which is a very quick walk) and beyond we’re breathtaking. This was the hike suggested by every local we encountered and it’s the one I would suggest to friends in the future. Even though we didn’t think it was possible at the time we all ended up a little sunburnt so plan for that!

What a cool little hike... not the hardest but the views at the top are amazing. Wasn’t busy at all and we had the top to ourselves at around 10am.. we were up and down in around 2h.Definitely need to take a couple areas slow but as far as the reward it was perfect!
