Great trail! Beautiful view of the lake on the mountain. Make sure to follow the well marked trail at the beginning. If it’s rained recently be sure to have proper boots, it’ll get muddy real quick. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/lake-marian-track/Show more

Length: 5.2 mi • Est. 3 h 34 m
Homer Saddle to Getrude Saddle Traverse, also know as the McPherson - Talbot Traverse is an extreme hike, only suited for experienced back-country hikers with navigational and technical skills. This is not to be taken lightly. The route starts at the Homer Tunnel car park, (closed during Winter months due to avalanches). There is no set trail for the Homer Saddle scramble, so just head on up for approximately 45 minutes to an hour, until you reach the saddle. Here, you will be rewarded with views of both sides of the Homer Tunnel. Traverse right, along the ridge until you reach Talbot's Ladder. Here, minor rock climbing is required. A harness, rope and helmet are essentials for safety. Once over Talbot's Ladder, veer to the right, staying on the ridge, heading towards Mt McPherson. Traverse across the snowfields, with an optional stop at Mount Talbot. Boots, crampons and ice axe highly recommended. Descend down the glacier towards Gertrude Saddle, finishing the hike at the Gertrude Saddle car park. Show more

Good track with nice views and not too difficult. Even doing part of the trail is pretty enjoyable. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/routeburn-track/Show more

Length: 42.4 mi • Est. Multi-day
The Routeburn Track is one of the Great Walks in New Zealand. The huts along the way are not only big but also well equipped with flush toilets, gas cookers and other nice gadgets. Of course this comes with a higher price and the necessity to book your bed in advance. The Routeburn Track gives you a great variety of landscape, from lushy forests with moss, fern and waterfalls to stunningly wide alpine scenery with tussock, crystal clear post-glacier-age lakes and a view up to the tasman Sea. Compared to the Routeburn Track, the Greenstone Track is less popular and built out. But the Greenstone Track offers a lot of variety and beauty for the eyes. The huts are of a simpler kind and without a reservation system, you might end up getting no bunk when you come in late on a busy day. The flip side is that it's substantially less crowded. Show more

This is a great trail with several huts along the way. It can get very muddy with difficult water crossings. Use caution before setting out on this trail. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/otago/places/mount-aspiring-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/rees-dart-track/Show more

Good, even surface, well defined trail. Quite exposed as you climb up to, and on, Key Summit but deep in a birch forest for the rest. Can be damp and misty day but certainty rewarding views along the way with a comfortable track. A popular trail this one with a huge carpark at the Divide. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/routeburn-track-lake-howden-track/Show more

This trail is well marked in the forest, but many trees have fallen making the trail slow and strenuous at times. The first five miles are in the forest with no views, but then it opens into a beautiful valley with an incredible view. You don’t see the glacier until you’re about a mile away from it. Over fall, a tough hike, but worth it if you’re spending the night. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/otago/places/glenorchy-area/things-to-do/earnslaw-burn-track/ Show more
