Did this hike in March 2019. 4 adults, one 9 yr old child, and the guide. Took us about 4 hrs to summit. Most (90%) is through trees, uphill all the way, over/under tree trunks, muddy narrow paths & rocky little streams. Once out in the open it’s a steep path through thick bushes & rocks (10%) all the way to top. View from top is worth absolutely every drop of sweat! Hard, but worth it! Felt right to follow local wishes & hire the guide. I say, honor the land, someone might visit your home one day.

favourite hike in NZ so far. nice trail along the valley then rises up over the pass.

Second part of the Classic hike. Best birthday present to myself.

Day 3 was my 21st birthday and I climbed MacKinnon Pass. Best day. Majestic mountains that show the best of Mother Nature in all her beauty.

Stunning hike! Weather had taken out the first part of the track (divide end) so took a small access track instead. Did it with the wife and kids, so this access track isn’t as difficult as the DOC site makes it out to be.

This hike just moved past several gems in my completed list as a favorite hike. I really lucked out with weather. No rain, though the trail was wet and middle and many spots at the top especially. All manageable but difficult and I understand why this hike gets difficulty rating of hard: it can get steep, requires some climbing up steep rocks that require handling tree roots for stability. Extremely fun hike though. WATCH YOUR STEP, it’s easy to twist and ankle or a knee if you don’t give each step your undivided attention. As for the lake views, just wow. Had some low clouds and the lake stayed calm enough for mirror reflections. One of my favorite hikes all time. Oh and I forgot to mention, there are several waterfalls in the beginning!!

We went in March with Ultimate Hikes. The weather was perfect. The whole hike was unbelievable in its beauty between rainforest, mountains and the rivers. Getting to drink water the super clean water from the rivers was great. Day 3 is very tough.

Well maintained track with awesome views at the summit. However, the tranquility was spoiled by the number of people on this trail. Would not recommend this hike for those looking for solitude and peacefulness. So glad that I took lots of pictures, because I will not do this trail again.

Awesome hike but it was pretty cold when we went. Others are pretty accurate in saying it’s a 1.5 hours slow climb but the incline is gradual enough to say it’s an easy climb up. If you go up during colder seasons like we did (we got there at first light at -1 degrees Celsius) make sure to wear wind resistant or thick clothing as the wind pierces pretty easily and some of the paths were very iced over after all the rain.

One of my best and hardest track. Muddy, slippery, tree trunk to cross and steep. But stunning view from the top! Parking closed at the begining of the track. No possibility to park anymore

Wonderful trail with different landscape. I stayed in Mackenzie Hut which was really nice. The trail is quite easy but climbs a little bit to go over the pass. I did the Caples and not the greenstone. Really nice hut in the valley. Very quiet compared to the Routeburn track.

best view in the south island. But also the hardest track. We did it in autumn. The track was very muddy and at the top frozen.

Amazing views at the top. The path is well marked and equipped so it's not too hard to go through the steep parts. However, do not attempt it on a rainy day ! The rocks are incredibly sleepery when wet. You will need some warm clothes to keep you warm up there and be careful if you have bad knees/anckles as you walk on loose rocks most of the time.

loved it. busy. but so worth it.

Nice relaxed hike. First part is in the forest and then its opened and no shade. About 1.5hrs max one way in slow pace. If you know a well kept secret this hike can continue from Marian lake viewpoint for another 2kms to a stunning viewpoint...

Gertrude Saddle has gotten extremely popular in the last few years - and for good reason. It's a fun hike with gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. The hike is about 8.6 miles out and back and took me 5.5 hours with an overnight backpack and sprained ankle. The beginning of the hike is through some trees, but the remainder follows a river/river bed until a short scramble and then a boulder field before reaching the saddle. The trail is fairly well marked, though I did get briefly lost coming out of the trees on the way back. I'd recommend downloading the AllTrails map just in case. The beginning of the hike is basically walking over loose rocks, so if you have a bad ankle like I do, be careful! The scramble section has cables, so it's fairly easy even if you aren't comfortable on rocks. The boulder field is well marked with cairns and markers and if you follow them, it's not bad. While Gertrude Saddle is very safe on a dry day, people have died when the weather has been bad. Numerous signs along the trail warn hikers of the danger. Do not attempt Gertrude if it has been raining! We were the only campers the night we stayed at Gertrude Saddle. It was peaceful, but very windy and cold! Be prepared if you plan to camp. @christinexploring Www.christinexploring.com

Beautiful trail in the valley. I did it from muddy Creek to Paradise. Muddy is the term for the trek ! Especially the first day, my feet were completely wet and if you're not careful, you can get mud to the knee. The views are stunning all along, and the huts are very confortable ! Take the time to do the cascade saddle as a side trip, it's worth it ! For the fastest, you can combine the second or the third day with the cascade saddle (it's a very long day but doable)

easy track, very muddy after a day of rain. I slept in the hut (3 bunkbeds), very basic. Nice sunset.

The first part of the track through the waterfall is very open, easy, and well-kept. After that it gets a lot steeper and rockier, earning the “Hard” difficultly. The lake is absolutely gorgeous!! I recommend going earlier in the day rather than later so the sun hits the mountain in the background just the right way.

Amazing hike. Definitely do NOT attempt if wet: there are lots of steep slick rocks. After the valley it gets very steep very fast, but definitely doable in good weather. Make sure you pay attention to the trail markers!! Once you reach the top there are a few different lookout points, all of which have beautiful views of the fjords.

Easy casual walk.

Where else can you walk 15 minutes and try out a walk wire. Pretty cool & had the place to ourselves.
