Great locals trail - I used to do this walk a few times a week :) Lovely views. I highly recommend hiking up for sunset! Bring a head torch to come back down :)

A strenuous but doable up and back during late December / January (especially if you walk from the base), but your effort will be well rewarded with amazing summit views of the mountains and water.

walked to summit from car park. Early September 2018. Very windy and cool on the exposed tops today but a fun climb to get the heart rate going and nice views. Did not stay long at the top due to cold wind.

Well graded, some nice views, particularly from McKellar saddle.

The walk in is pretty average through normal beech forest. The campsite at the end near the river is superb, with magnificent views of the rock faces and waterfalls. Beautiful river too.

Great views and seals to see. easy gravel path.

The views on this track would hands down be the best I have seen in NZ so far.

I hiked Ben Lomond on end of August. The track to the Saddle was fine, I had crampons on so no trouble navigating on icy ground. But the track to the top is very hard and the tracks are unseenable due to snow. Don't have gaiters on so my feet is freezing everytime I fell on deep snow. The view from saddle is very nice but the summit was amazing.

Excellent, steep climb over slate rocks with steps + tree holds throughout. I climbed in the winter (July) so a bit muddy with an icy stretch about 3/4 up. Incredible woods, moss and views. Watch for the trail runners and zipliners. You might even see a helicopter land at the gondola. Sheer heaven in NZ!

Fantastic day yesterday. 6/8/2018 . We walked up the access road crom Lomond Cres till the Saddle the over to Arthurs point, a lot of snow so slow going for a while.Took us about 6 and half hours. Track washed out in a couple of places on way to Arthurs point but okay to get around. Its a shame we cannot add photos here.

Please see Ben Lomond 6/8/2018.
We walked up to Ben Lomond saddle the to Arthurs point fantastic walk took us about 6 and half hours, lots of snow at the top but no wind and sunny today. Great views.

A great little trail. Brilliant views from the old gold mining battery up the Rees river. Very worthwhile.

Awesome trail in the middle of fjordland National Park. The peace at lake Marian is awesome!

Beautiful views & clear pathways. Bonus for me was it’s dog-friendly. Was able to make a full loop back to the car park I started at - took about 5 hours all in all (including snack & endless photo stops!) Had a great day - would definitely recommend :)

I only hiked down after returning from the skyline. A decent hike for sure. It took about an hour to get down

Absolutely stunning vistas, we were incredibly lucky with the weather - 3 bluebird days to enjoy incredible scenery. A good challenging hike

A great challenging hill climb with amazing views. Loved the faerie grove

Nice short 2hr trail!!

Walked the track in July (mid winter) starting in the darkness at 7am. The first 4ks up were fine, then the track became snow/ice covered which made progress slow going. Amazing views at the top, but the lookout point was very slippery (be careful if going up when icy).

6hours return.

This felt like a never-ending up up up. My plan was to take a short, relaxed walk about halfway up. But it was so marvelous, I had to keep going. Made it up and back in 3.5 hrs (jogging most of the way down). However, all I had to carry were my poles and light jacket. Water would have been a plus, but not essential. Only passed 5 people the whole time, all of varying fitness. YOU can do this! So very worth it.

As the other reviews mentioned, the track itself is pretty bland but the views are spectacular! Worth going all the way to the top past the view point. About 1/3 of the track was very muddy and slippery and the summit push is pretty snowy, but manageable (we were hiking in running shoes). Definitely steep. We made it to the summit in just under 3 hours with the above conditions.

Great hike with an amazing view at the lake. It’s basically a climb the whole way until the last 5-10 minutes when you descend into the lake.

Physically I found this hard (I wouldn’t consider myself unfit but I don’t train or anything), but the trail is very straightforward and well maintained. All worth it for the views, and options to climb right up to the peak for the added panoramic view ❤️

Difficult but insanely worth it.

Went with my mountain bike.
amazing track. most of it is on the road or on gravel.
I would suggest to take the camp track once you reached the Larnach Castle instead of the Castlewood road.
the camp track is a beautiful downhill. a real treat after the whole trip going uphill.
