Great hike! Descent was a bit challenging.

Beautiful track where you can see both of the volcanos. Compare to the Crossing almost no people.

This is one of the best day hikes I have completed in New Zealand so far. It is such a beautiful walk through desert like terrain, streams and little waterfalls, climbing up mountain ridges, crunching through melting snow, ascending a mountain side through a chilly wind, gingerly negotiating down slippery rocks and sand to come to breathtaking mountain lakes, aqua blue, green and deep blue in colour. But the highlight was to come, the descent through alpine valleys into a forest with a stream running alongside the track.

Beyond a doubt one of the greatest day hikes I've ever done. Incredible alpine views of the volcanic mountains and truly felt like walking through Mordor (LOTR fans). Definitely some scrambling down after reaching the overlook that some people on trail were finding difficult due to loose rock. Bring long sleeves and a hat because there is zero shade on majority of this trail.

Not for the faint of heart. Lots of loose rocks and shale can make it difficult to keep traction. Use the larger rocks on the left hand side when going up so you're not slipping as much. Descent isn't much easier as you slide down the rocks, maintaining balance can be difficult. Beautiful views from the top and definitely feel rewarded at the end.

Super randonnée, même avec un niveau de randonné faible cette randonné est largement praticable. Des superbes paysages, à couper le souffle.

5 heures de randonnée pour une vue magnifique au sommet malgré les nuages car le vent souffle et les nuages bougent très vite !

once in a lifetime experience!

I hiked this trail on Monday Feb 17th with approximately 2000 other hikers according to my shuttle driver. The trail had been closed for two days prior due to a death on Devils Staircase and the weather the few days after were predicted to be bad so everyone was pushed to Monday. The hike up to the craters was cloud covered but once we got to the top it did clear for a bit. Not the best view but we were all grateful for any view at all. There are three harder parts the rest I found fairly easy. I hiked it in 5 hours but I am an experienced hiker and didn’t take many photos. Wear the right footwear and be prepared for any weather . Don’t under estimate the difficulty if you are an inexperienced hiker or out of shape. There are many injuries , deaths and rescues on this trail.

Wow. Not as hard as I thought. Doc says - 7-8 hours. Mmmm. I have done it in 4 hours. Nice walk but so busy. Especially around the lakes. Take your break just up the hill of the red crater and watch people falling down.
