PHEW! This is a leg burner. Long and low uphill until devil’s staircase, then a beautiful walk in the crater. After this is a slow slog up the loose rocks to the highest point on the track. You are rewarded with views of the emerald lakes! Down the the lakes is a long thick walk through volcanic sand, you’ll have to take this slow and sideways. You’ll eventually come out to the other side of the mountain with beautiful views of Taupo. Toward the end, prepare yourself for a never-ending (ok, 3kms but feels like forever) bush walk to the car park. But otherwise, this is one of the coolest, most otherworldly walks you can do in the country.

Wow. That’s all I can say! Park employees were telling us “not to go” due to bad weather...it didn’t ever rain (thank goodness) but the hurricane force winds at the top were quite something! We used Tongariro Expeditions to shuttle us from our car at the finish to the start...then were able to hike to our car when we were done. Made the whole trek about 14 miles total. Highly recommend all of it!

Do absolutely in the opposite direction of a clock. Better in terms of unevenness and especially of world. All the people who make Alpine Crossing do it in the normal sense !!

The peak was closed the day I visited due to sustained 70km/h winds with gusts up to 143km/h. So I decided to park at the start (4 hour maximum) and hike in-and-out. I did the same at the end. As a result, I was 8km short of hiking the trail in both directions and saw nearly everything I wanted to twice. The trail is very diverse and that helps keep you fully engaged for ~6-8 hours. There is lowlands, steep climbs, a dirt crater, alpine ascent, emerald and blue lakes, above-the-treeline scrub, steep descents, a lush forest, waterfall and stream. Highly recommended.

Very beautiful, very busy. Start before sunrise if possible to avoid the crowds and for the best weather.

Tough to hike this now with the ski resort setup around it. To avoid snow, we had to navigate many rock scrambles. This is definitely on the high end of hard. Would have needed full snow equipment to make it beyond the gondola as of Nov 30. Probably is more reasonable further into the summer but we had to stop at the top of the gondola. Ski resort was still operating and they were seemingly not too thrilled we went out for the hike but they didn’t give us too much trouble. Only made it a few miles out before having to take the gondola back and I’m saying this as a decently well traveled and versed hiker.

Awesome hike, well worth the effort...high amount of traffic and be prepared for all weather and terrain. 47 people have perished on this trail in the past 10 years...take it seriously

Beautiful forest, but one of the lookouts is currently closed.
