Fantastic 360degree views from the top - highly recommend. Wear something warm in winter - it is extremely exposed & windy!

Walked the first part of the trail until the lake and hut, that’s a bit under 4km one way. The path climbs steadily to 300m the whole way, coming back it’s all downhill. Very beautiful pristine nature. The lakeside hut was good shelter from the cold winter wind. Would be a great swimming place in summer.

Lake Waikaremoana is part of the Te Urewera National Park and the name means ‘Sea of rippling waters’. This is the deepest lake in the North Island, 256m @ 600m above sea level. It is part of the 9 Great Walks of NZ. The trail is 44km long and can be covered over 3-4 days with huts and campsites along the track. The hiking trails lead to beautiful rainforests, waterfalls, caves, beaches and 1000 years Rata trees.

I did this hike with my boyfriend, we booked the 3 huts as advertised. First day hike was great. Than we came to the first hut where was an organized, big, loudly group who got special treatmant with chocolate, grapes, hot towels, etc :,) bit akward. The second hike was also great, but we ended at noon in 2nd hut. No clue what to do so we decided to skip this place and start the third hike. This went amazing, did get a special hut on the road. Feeling so lucky not packed like sardines in a tin this night ;-) in the end we took the water taxi one day before we had the booked one. All went fine and this was a special and beautiful experience.

Nice trail, a bit steep just before the peak, also it was super windy and rainy when we did it. The view's worth it though.

Amazing walk, spectacular views of lake & surrounding scenery. We condensed four days in a little over two massive days, skipping several huts but staying in the two best/biggest ones. Most huts are lakeside so you can enjoy a swim anytime. And it was hot ...

Tried this lesser-known track after wanting to for a while. It's a good taste of what you get on longer walks, but packed into a relatively short trail. Podocarp forest with some very large Rata, Totara and Rimu, and some quite challenging climbs at times, but nothing any experienced tramper would struggle with. Would be a good track to use to build up fitness for longer hikes. It took me about an hour each way. The track down to the Matanganui stream was some of the steepest on the walk, should you choose to do it.

Two hours of a well-marked round trip from the main gate parking lot. Fairly strenuous way up, followed by a nice relaxing narrow path down through the forest. Great photo ops at the peak, and nice relaxing solitude in the forest.

Magnifique.

Great walk! Lots of variety, nice forest, stunning hills and an amazing mountain peak view from Te Mata Peak! With 2 little pauses we walked it in the 2h 15m that stands for it.

Amazing 4 day tramp with stunning views all around. Went the opposite way to the norm starting at Whanganui hut. Ascended the mountain day 3 and saw the bluffs on day 4 when packs were lightest and views were the most stunning (ending the trek on a high). Weather varied, sunny and hot day 2, freezing and snow day 3-4 up at Panekire hut. Bring warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag For just incase, we were freezing all night and wood was too damp to start a fire :(
