Not what I would call “easy” given the up-and-down hills near Okiato.

Great trail with mixture of terrain.

If you want some shadow and experience walking in a rain forest, Alex Knob is for you. If you want views all way up, chose another one. But the view for the last km is amazing! Best view of Franz Josef for sure! Even if the distance and elevation are high, it goes pretty easy. We are slow walkers and we did it in 6 hours. Only one bug... the helicos! Too bad!

Première partie (Sealer track) plutôt difficile avec toutes les marches, la 2ème partie est plus intéressante et offre une super vue sur la vallée si le temps est découvert.

Technically demanding. Great views and certainly feels private, but the trail itself is quite narrow and considerably overgrown - requires your full attention to keep your footing sure. I sometimes run trails, but would not have been able to do so on this one. Some areas of downhill is quite steep and may involve a bit of scrambling. The downhill bit leading to the bridge was steep and hard on the knees. Was wearing shorts but would recommend long pants to protect from the brush. Would definitely recommend going counter-clockwise from Tobins Track to the Norman Smith Bridge and then back into town on the Arrow River Trail. It’s easy to miss the gated access from Tobins Track going up. No water or amenities on the trail, so bring your own.

Rewarding views, but not what I expected, as I personally enjoy something a little more technical and varied. Is essentially a constant up-hill to a nice little look-out point with benches. Trail is more or less a gravel road, and is in fine condition. Hiking boots not necessary - walking or running sneakers would be sufficient. I believe you can loop down to back into town, but I went back part of the way I came on Tobins to access the New Chums trail. Technically easy, but decently challenging in terms of physical fitness. No water or amenities, so bring your own.

Did this trail on Tuesday, February 25. The day was sunny and I was perfectly comfortable in shorts and short sleeves. Is mostly up-hill from either direction and peaks at the look-out point next to German Hill. Beautiful views towards Lake Hayes and Cecil Peak. Recommend the quick scurry to the top of German Hill. And the short detour to the Norman Smith Bridge in the Arrow River Gorge. About 1/3-1/2 in open tussock, so sunblock is recommended. Due to recent rains and stream-crossings, a couple spots that are muddy and guaranteed to dirty your shoes. No water sources, so bring your own. Was a bit overgrown in areas, but I don’t mind that much personally. I started from the Arrow River Gorge/Trail, and did the loop counter-clockwise, which I would recommend. Happy trails!

Saw a Weka while in the woods. Trail in excellent shape.

didn't have time to go all the way, so just went to the summit. for those who have limited time, can just go to the summit, hace pretty nice view there already, almost 360. so lucky to see the rainbow between the mountains!

Long walk for not so impressive views. Large part is through the forest. Only the last few kilometers are outside the forest, but the scenery is not great. In conclusion: not worth the effort.

Hard trail with plenty of wind and incline up top. Taking the gondola up would take the sting out.

Fairly easy and flat trail. Bring bug spray as there are lots of sandflies at the Wharfedale hut. Also, the drive to the start of the tract has a ford to drive through with 4WD advised... so check the weather forecast first and take a 4WD if you can. Really pretty views and great star gazing at night.

The trail is steep, but very doable. The scenes are amazing. Well worth the effort. We were told that you could camp up near the hut. Would still double check with the local visitor center before dragging a tent up.

Awesome hike. Beautiful views. Did have some steep parts but not too difficult. We did an extra bit down from the top on the side (forgot the name) and finished the whole trek with breaks and pictures in 2.5 hours. I recommend this hike.

Great trails. First 2.5 k pretty much straight up. Good workout! Then eases for next 1.5 along ridge (all exposed) beautiful views

Easy trail, we extended out a bit to make it a 5k round trip. Saw some cute mice, and the suspension bridges were a fun cross. Nothing much more interesting but a nice peaceful walk, not unlike the PNW.

A very pleasant surprise; a beautiful walk with splendid views and a large birds choir singing. Leaflet is very informative. Well worth the $10 fee.
