The trail is just a 4wheel drive track going up the mountain. So not the most interesting trail to walk on. But the views are amazing, especially when there's still snow on the back mountain range. Definitely worth it on a clear day.

Lots of spikes along the way, too narrow and bushes have over grown. Sweet view but just dangerous on the way in and out, slipped a lot. View is nice from the cave but the walk to and from I think is not worth it.

Great family walk

Great walk especially in the height of summer when the Rata trees are out. You are provided with a map that describes features along the way. Great waterfall. Towards the end of the track there’s a pond complete with row boat. A must for a weekend family excursion.

Did this in reverse. I can see we took the harder way, quite a steep climb up the back end of the mountain. Fantastic views at the top. Take care with the weather as its known to be windy/cold up there.

This map needs to be updated. This is no longer a loop and it is unsafe to get right up to the cave. Looking towards the cave the right hand part of the “loop” is closed due to earthquake damage. Left hand half is fine. However it is best to turn left towards Summit Road rather than attempt to get to the cave.

this is not a kid friendly track at the moment, it has obviously had no repairs since the earthquake and the right side of the loop is closed...not that we saw that till we got to the end having nearing broken my ankle several times. I would highly recommend not doing this track after any rain.

be prepared for sudden changes in weather. even if it's hit and sunny when you start out be prepared for hail and snow at the top. we did it a few weeks back and there was a sudden change of weather about 20 minutes to the summit. the exposure to wind and snow is awful. I was sure I wouldn't make it...! obviously I did. 2.5 hrs down the mountain cold and wet is not fun. be prepared!

The mountains during winter are just magnificent. The views are really rewarding. Every now and then your heart rate gets up there, but hey... I loved it and so did the dog. Victoria Dog Park is on the track as well . It’s perfect for a little run and play around for your four legged friend. Watch out for the mountain bikers who are having a blast up there too. Maybe don’t do this track after rainy days. It’s get quite muddy and slippery especially when you got the dog on the lead.

steep as hell and can be slippery, awesome views though

great track,

Great views! Steep climb initially and can be a bit muddy when wet but definitely worth the effort!

Great steep walk, but absolutely worth it

Wouldn’t do it after a rainfall, it’s quite dangerous as it is!
It is closed but you can access it.

Nice easy track suitable for families or walking the dog, with a bit of uphill and downhill work for extra spice. Well marked, this goes thru an area of private land where your dog must be on a lead, before entering the dog exercise area at Victoria Park, where he / she can have a good sniff all round. It also uses some shared areas with mountain bike riders, so your dog has to go on the lead there too. All in all, the whole 5.6km return walk with terrific views over Christchurch city took us an hour and three quarters in average weather conditions.

Pretty awesome considering its a relatively short hike. Went up during the snow and came down in the dark with a headtorch, Epic!

Recommend starting counterclockwise as the footing is better for the down hill portion. Hiking poles a good idea also.

Pretty fast and relatively easy with great views from the cave and a nice seating area to sit back and relax.
