We enjoyed our hike in and swim at the falls. Short and nice cool break under the falls. We didn’t make it to the top but it looked even more amazing. That said, we were glad we didn’t as it started pouring right as we got to our car. Perfect timing. Easy hike.

Did this great hike on 1/25/18 with a group of dancemates. This hike includes a ferry ride, yay. Lovely to see the top of Rangitoto, views of Auckland, the kidney ferns, lava caves, the black back gull colony, the Baches, and mangroves. Overall a great day trip.

Excellent trail!

My favourite coastal track in Auckland.

Really fun trek around Black lava flows. Easy to get off by yourself even so close to city.

Great views. Nice and easy track. It should be rated as easy.

Fantastic trail/road/path but signage could be better- missing signs, hidden signs and confusing signs but such a fantastic trail.
Definately will do this again.

Amazing 360 views. So beautiful.

Absolutely recommend to everybody hiking on this trail. It was very easy trail, only some slight up hill terrain which was a bit tiring. Once you get to the falls you can take a swim in the water. Also recommend you walk up to the top of the falls where the view is spectacular!!

Good trail with nice waterfall. Keep heading up and you'll reach the top of the waterfall which is great.
Good trail for kids

Nice trail and waterfall.

Nice short trail, especially Vincent's track was nice.

Beautiful vistas. Nice ups and downs. Some erosion on trail. Windy. Well worth it.

great walk and view

Nice trail with wonderful views of native vegetation and waterfall. Can be overcrowded at times, but overall worth doing. Good trail for kids.

Loved it. Breath taking views

This track is pretty easy, mostly flat so not that physically challenging. The only challenge is the walk through the sand dunes due to the steepness as well as the strong winds. And another challenge is the muddy track. It gets too muddy if you take the walk from the sand dunes on the left side then loop around the lake as you approach the waterfalls. Pretty cute waterfall and an easy walk back however be aware that you will have to cross the stream (very shallow) so your shoes will end up muddy and soaking wet. Otherwise a fun place to hike. Parking can be competitive so be there early. Also if you want bring a boogie board so you can do some sand boarding!

Beautiful island. Grab the 0930 boat over and get the full day. The coast trail is well defined but a little rocky. You jump onto the Summit Road which is a drive able road. Just before the summit I went off course and checked out the Lava caves and then grabbed the summit hike to get to the top. Grabbed the tail behind back and around back down the front instead of the road back down. I was a little worried about time as the last boat is at 1530. DONT MISS THE BOAT!! Coming down the road I would uave gotten to see the light house and I think I would have had time. The trail down the front was nice too. Everything is well marked.

Easy track through mostly grasslands
A few nice views of the coastline, and an excellent walk along the beach when the tide is low. Unfortunately lots of the canopy has been cleared away for farmlands
Medium traffic; saw a few runners and a couple other hikers along the way

Fairly easy trek with gentle hills and steps up the steeper gradients. A few spots of mud and minor washout.
Very nice views throughout of the coast, rock faces, and through forests.
Medium traffic; saw 5-10 other along the track

amazing views with every turn, no difficulties in passing through

Great! Bring food to rest for a while in one of the many spots enjoying stunning views and private beaches

Short Hike down through the bush to the beach, fairly steep at points with a rope to assist the final climb down to the beach. Great views from the top and down at the small beach looking out into the Manukau Heads. Good for a quick hike when time is short.

Visited from the US, really nice walk around the island. I took the 9:45am ferry which is 30$ NZD for round trip. I recommend making a day out of it and catching a morning ride out to the island, the last departure from Motatupu back to Auckland is 4pm I believe and they won't wait for you :)

I started with the summit hike and was going at a fairly good pace. I'm in fairly good shape so I made it in about 35 minutes. Views are ok, you get a nice 360 view of the island and can see the Auckland skyline from the top. If you want to continue exploring, the lava caves are about a 20 minute walk with some back tracking down the summit trail. Look for signs and trail markers, you'll miss them if you aren't paying attention.

From there, you could back track to the main summit trail and walk the roadway down to Yankee Wharf and connect to the Coastal Track (map: https://www.topomap.co.nz/NZTopoMap/nz6303/Yankee-Wharf/Auckland). PROTECT your ankles and wear hiking footwear! The Yankee Wharf spot is a nice place to have lunch and view the serene waters. With a few breaks along the way, I made it back to Rangitoto Wharf by 3:30pm. Good way to spend a day outside of Auckland and be back in time for dinner.

good view, worth it.

On a clear day, this walk is reminiscent of Ireland and thus has magnificent views. On a sidewardly raining day, beautiful foggy views. The trail could be better marked on the south coast portion of the loop.

Amazing did it in August and it took all day because I kept stopping to stare at everything but I did not do the loop I stayed hiking on the coast past cable cable so it ended up about 7miles before I decided to hike back into town. Just get a map and keep going!

Beautiful track! Quite tricky for the unfit due to steepness of the climb. However, truly worth it. The view is magnificent and breathtaking. We witnessed the 360 rotation view of whatipu. At the top you will see a bench where you can absorb the beauty and peace of nature has gifted us. Worth the climb, also tricky to go down since some rocks slides down with you. Otherwise, really worth it.

Hi. Nice write up. The name of the island is Motutapu. In Maori, "Motu" means "island", and "tapu" means "sacred", hence "Motutapu" = "Sacred Island". Cheers, Brent.
