#3 - Eede to Retranchement
Eede, Zeeland, NetherlandsLength: 13.0 mi • Est. 5 h 25 m
A beautiful trail passing the Belgian border. The path passes old places such as Middelburg, Sluis and Retranchement. These are all places that played an important role in the Zwin economy, during the 80-year war, during the Belgian uprising or the Second World War. There have been fights in this area and especially looting, burning and flooding. Walking along the old creeks (lost creek), we pass Middelburg (B), an abandoned border village with a mighty church on the Molenkreek. The border was established with the Peace of Munster in 1648. From Middelburg there is a beautiful path to the Damse Vaart, which forms the connection between Bruges and Sluis. They had to demolish half the city of Damme to build it. Since WWII the canal is no longer used for transport, but it forms a nice ribbon to Sluis, the center of Zeeuws Vlaanderen. As a city on the Zwin, Sluis was important and has also been destroyed several times. The Bastion structure with its ravelins has been very well preserved, while the Belfry (unique here) stands beautifully. We leave Sluis over a part of the city walls to another defensive work: Retranchement. In fact, they are two forts namely Fort Oranje (1621) and Fort Nassau (1640) with a wall. The entire complex served to protect the state banks of the Zwin. In 1683, part of the fort in the Zwin disappeared after a storm. A dam has brought this to the surface again. Now Retranchement (bulwark) is a nice village where you can walk over the walls and drink a beer on the Markt.
