Zachary Christy-Aronson reviewed north country trail

Just did what I think was this out and back section of the North Country Trail on Sunday. Not sure what direction this particular track wants you to go, but I ended up with an 11 mile total out and back by heading past the Newaygo Visitor Center spur toward Twinwood Lake, then 2 miles south on the sandy trail joiner road (Basswood Drive), crossing the railroad tracks, and veering north onto the well marked North Country Trail again to get to Coolbough. Some nice vignettes along the way, Bigelow Creek and what I think was the Cathedral Pines area at Coolbough with varied terrain and little in the way of hard elevation changes it was not too far from Chicago. However, on this section the interesting parts were few and far between, so it ended up a bit of a slog in 85 degree heat. I might recommend it later in the year though due to the prevalence of mosquitoes, gnats, and horseflies. Will try it again though, time permitting, in the Fall and maybe head north this time.

Great little hike with plenty of spots along the way to get some views and pictures of the surrounding mountians. A very short boulder scramble at the end gets you to the lake shore where you should pick a boulder and take time to enjoy the view up Chaos Canyon.

This tiny little overlook trail is underwhelming, but then again it is a tiny little overlook trail, and what your there for is the view, and it is a grand one, the first place I've been that gave me chills. However, I think it took heading to the bottom of the Black Canyon and back on one of the very strenuous 1 mile 2000' drop trails to really give me an appreciation of how massive and beautiful the Painted Wall really is.

Just echoing what others have said. Get out early for less people on the trail, as the reward on this easy out and back day is a perfect mirror reflecting pool that makes even an unacclimated climb up to a silent Gem Lake worth it.

Went down this trail then out around Ecola Point and back at extreme low tide a few years back. A great little trail full of fond memories.

Did this last week as part of a wilderness route to the bottom of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. As noted, it give some great views, as it plunges a few hundred feet before seperating from the Gunnison Route to climb back up. It was worth the exertion in the afternoon to get some great shots of outcrop the visitor center's overlook is on.

This is my go to local trail. I hike it slow in the Fall to see beauty of the changing trees, in the Winter snows to test my fitness, and in the Spring to watch the surf at the beach, the stroms rolling in across the lake, and the flowers in bloom. A short drive from Chicago but limited parking that keeps the numbers on the trail light, but an easy 2 mile walk-in to the access from the South Shore line station near Dune Park along the Calumet Trail is also available. A bonus are the soft glacial sand hills that you can take slow and easy or push to a loping run on to practice for high altitude hiking.
