Yianni Laskaris reviewed Mullica River Trail

Hiked in late May. Only completed portion from Atsion to where the trail makes a loop. Trail was definitely scenic, with blooming mountain laurel everywhere. I was somewhat disappointed by how loud the trail was because ORVs were zooming past me on an adjacent dirt road for most of day.

Good, short trail. Had some really nice views of marsh and wading birds half way through the loop. Tons of fowler's toads and other little critters along the trail too. If you venture out in the late afternoon/evening, be prepared to be bitten.

We started the trail by connecting from the Blue Ridge Parkway, heading down Trace Ridge, looping around, and making our way back up along Spencer Gap. The first 2/3rds of the trail were really pleasurable, with great views, beautiful foliage and late-blooming flowers and the trail was not difficult.

The last 3rd was pretty intense. We followed the trail as mapped to the T, it was covered with fallen branches, was quite narrow, and appeared unused by anyone for a while. I didn't see any signs for an adjacent trail, so we kept trekking on.

We'd have gone back up a different trail if we knew this was the condition it would be in...I'm all for a challenging hike, but having to contort my body to move around thick scrub wasn't the greatest option.

Yianni Laskaris reviewed Green Swamp Preserve and Lake Waccamaw State Park

This review is for the Green Swamp Preserve. Yes, the insects here can be intense at times, but the plethora of amazing carnivorous plants, wildflowers and orchids you'll come across is truly amazing. There are many gems hidden in the wiregrass, and every season has its own beautiful blooms. May and August are great times to catch a whole range of wildflowers. As mentioned by others, the trails can get mucky after a heavy rain event, so it's best to bring boots, along with water, and long pants are helpful too.
