Gordon Schaffner reviewed City View and Walnut Forest Trails

Wow is this place cool! At a glance you would not think anything of this place...you might not even know it is a park. I went there in hopes of doing a loop hike and passing by the pond, but the temptation of all the different little trails proved too much to resist. I started in a neighborhood on an old road of broken pavement, then fire roads, then a smaller trail thru a woodland oak area, and finally to a pond surrouned by pines. You get totally lost in the place until you walk over to an outlook and see you are just a few miles from dowtown LA. The park can seem a bit worn around the edges in places, but overall it is in great shape especially considering where it is located. The ONLY reason I dont give 5 stars is bacause I am a trail snob...to get 5 stars it has to be amazing.

Gordon Schaffner reviewed Dunsmore Canyon and Le Mesanger Loop Trails

This is a beautiful little place with several trails and options. Went after a storm and everything was incredibly lush. It is a steady incline on the Dunsmore Trail from start to finish, but the Le Messanger Loop is a bit nicer on the legs. We actually started from Foothill Blvd instead of the trail head in order to add a few more miles and about 500 additional feet in elevation...a decision my legs are paying for now.

This place is really something to be experienced. I read a lot of write-ups on this loop saying how poorly marked the trail is, but I think many of those were outdated. Once you find the parking area at the trail head (located at mile marker 24 along Park Blvd) you will find good signage on the trail...the only challenge is to actually stay on the trail. There are rocks and branches that are strategically placed to guide you. As long as you are paying attention these are easy to spot. Regardless I would highly suggest a compass and map for this trail (my GPS failed about 20 yards from the car) People have gotten lost here and it has ended tragically, so why take any chances

I see people on this trail all the time when I am at this park and it looked basic...which is why I chose it to do my first night hike. Well I should have paid attention when others say this is not really a loop. You hike one trail till you find what looks to be a steep old firebreak. Then follow a series of use trails till you make your way to another established trail for the return. It is steep and somewhat confusing, but manageable...unless you are in the dark. Verdict-I had a blast, but not everyone's cup of tea

I think it is worth clarifying that hiking here is easy if you follow the mountain bike trail and head back on the San Emigdio Canyon trail. If you want something more challenging take the Tule Elk trail instead of the mountain bike trail. You will chew up elevation the first two miles. There is an amazing view from the lookout area. Nearly everyone turns around there so if you just keep going there will be nobody left but you and the wildlife. There are animals everywhere! I was even overrun on the trail by a herd of sheep. The irony is that I saw everything except Elk.
