I would consider this trail a “must do” for anyone wanting to experience one of the great features of the park rather than just gaze upon it from below. The weather was nearly ideal with temps starting in the upper 40’s and capping in the low 70’s for the day. With that there are multiple sections of steep rock stairs that will slow progress and should not be taking lightly (ascending or descending). The majority of the hike is routine hiking with multiple outhouses along the way. As other have said, the sub-dome is very strenuous and has a tendency to get congested with two-way traffic. The actual cables tended to be the same and full finger gloves are recommended. The view from on top is absolutely worth the effort and nearly anyone who has patience and determination can reach the top if you budget enough time.

General area is awesome for variety and scenery; however, the trail between Kaway Paay Peak and the Visitor Center is closed. Still recommend this route just use Father Junipero Serra Trail for the mentioned closed section.

Very enjoyable trail overall. but I'd classify the traffic as high. Quite the gathering of people at the top waiting for photo opportunities. There is a good deal of climbing as the terrain profile suggests; however, it's fairly gradual overall.

Parking is limited to a small pay-to-park area outside of the campground; however, the trailhead is very easy to find off the main road. The trail itself is very easy to follow and mostly clear of debris. There are a few areas that have low hanging limbs but nothing that prevents completing the trails. Good views and no climbs that I would classify as steep, but there is a good overall elevation gain. Overall it was a great trail. I began hiking just before 10 and finished just before 3. Highly recommend bringing more water than you expect to need as there is no water source along the trail and you can expect nearly continuous sun exposure.
