This is a hidden and lightly traveled trail. I'm a fan. Here's what to look for, because if you do not stay alert, you can miss the best parts. Much of the trail from the trail head is downhill, and some of it is rocky and steep. Once you are off the flat part, you are negotiating what amounts to a cliff wall down to the stream. Pack light, as you will likely want a dip in the stream. So hear's the catch: we missed the caves. Naturally we thought they were down at the creek-side. So one the way back up, we found them. What an amazing set of carve outs. We spent quite a bit of time exploring the caves on the way up. If you plan well, you can take a rocky alternative route back to the flat part of the trail. Caves is a fine trail for all levels, and the "caves" are worth seeing and exploring. It is not an all-day affair, so pair this one up with another. Well-worth a morning trip!

    West Tucker reviewed Baldwin Trail

The Baldwin Loop is VERY poorly marked. Other than that, it is an awesome hike. We took the Templeton Trail (which was awesome in its variety) to the trail head that was just beyond the Oak Creek. But once you are on, watch the trail markers carefully. You need to keep making left hand turns or you will be on another trail and not know it. We started at the Cathedral Rock Trail, went to the Templeton, and then connected to the Baldwin Loop. Please Note: The Baldwin Loop will not get you back to the parking lot near Cathedral. Here's the point: make sure that you have a trail map or an app. It is WAY TOO EASY, even for an experienced hiker, to get -- not lost, but onto the wrong trail. If you are doing this trail, not as an additional trail but rather as a stand-alone, there is parking at one end of the trail.

Unlike its' Templeton cousin that it shares one leg (10%), there is no creek for cooling off so take advantage when you are creek-side. Some parts of Baldwin are very sunny so if you are using it as a connector, like we were, make sure to pack sunscreen, water, and a trail-map you trust. It is easy to go wrong, so double down on carefulness.

Hiking in and around Sedona just keeps getting better. We took the advice of most of the reviewers below and took off early. We switched rental cars to a truck in order to get closer to the trail head in the vehicle. We need not have bothered. The hike on the dirt trail was not that bad, and the people complaining about the rough part up near the top must not have made it up. Any headaches involved with the trail were nothing compared to the incredible views from up near the bridge. This could not have been a better trail experience. Any skinned shins are worth it.

This trail was nearly straight up. DO NOT attempt without proper footwear. View from lookout level is amazing, and worth the effort. Don't drag friends along that are not athletic, as they will not make it all the way up. As others have said, there are many tourists also. Almost all are friendly and helpful, but it is not private.

This trail is at the high end of moderate. Granted, there are no steep inclines, but the trial is 99% rocky, and many of the stones are loose. This is no problem, really, except that you must watch your footing constantly. Still no issue, but it keeps you from being able to enjoy some spectacular vistas. Loved the trail, and HIGHLY recommend it, but as other reviewers have pointed out, you have to stop at times for full enjoyment. Do yourselves a favor and go at sunset.
