Wendy Hesse reviewed Mount Whitney via Mount Whitney Trail

In July 2015, Deb & I finally got to Mt. Whitney's summit. However, again, NOT via the Main Whitney Trail. We couldn't obtain a permit, so we opted to enter & exit via Cottonwood Pass/Horseshoe Meadows, making it a 6-day, 65-mile trip. Experienced all 4 seasons. Every step, day was great & challenging. May do Whitney again. Definitely would be via Main Trail & maybe as a day trip.

We camped at Washoe Lake in August 2016 to view the Perseid Meteor shower. Got an early start one morning with one of the doggos & enjoyed this jaunt.

Very nice walk across fields from Highway 1 to coast then along the bluffs. A fine walk for most, but NO DOGS ALLOWED

2.25 miles up & 2.25 miles down; amazing 360 degree view at 11,460'! Have done this hike several times but made it to the top only once, Sept. 2016.

Must do this hike every year! Popular but not too crowded, as immediate creek crossing & steep incline discourage the faint-of-heart. Power on past! Gorgeous scenery & stunning lake await you!

Did this hike in early May. Despite 7:45am start, the trail was mobbed -- with fairly happy, cooperative people. On the way up, on the way down, at the top, views to die for. Ummm, seriously, be careful on the chain/spine section. Walters Wiggles was fun. Icebox was cool. Saw a pair of resident condors soaring near their rocky nest. Amazing! Loved this park & hike.

This is a classic hike. At about 7.5 miles RT, it's a great day hike that has it all: a rushing river, cascades right and left, convenient footbridges, minor creek crossings, a not-too-overwhelming elevation gain, historic artifacts, amazing rock formations, views galore, a large lake. There are lots of good campsites at the lake, if you're backpacking.

Wendy Hesse reviewed Henry W. Coe State Park: Middle Ridge Trail

Hiked about 9 miles in Coe Park yesterday with 4 friends. Started at park HQ and took Monument Trail to Hobbs Rd to Middle Ridge Trail to Fish Trail then added on about 3 miles by looping south around Forest Trail then north via Springs Trail to Corral Trail and back to HQ. Though the skies were heavy to start with, the storm had passed, and we avoided having to put on rain gear. By 2pm the skies were clear and we had sun and a cool breeze, perfect for hiking. Encountered backpacking groups -- pairs of friends, school groups and scouts. The trails took us through a varied landscape from shad,y wooded creeksides to sunny, windswept hillsides studded by iconic stand-alone California oaks.

Did this hike in May. Accessed from County Line Trail Head. Started out dirt with a few snow patches. In the east & north sides of the cone we hiked through snow. Luckily we had a good map & GPS to keep us close to the trail. High points: heard the distant thrumming of a grouse; Stefano, the guide dog in training's, first hike (& snow)! Also, it was cool to circumnavigate a Dardanelles cone. Next--to summit one.

The trail head is accessed in the horrible Annett's Twin Lakes RV campground. Walk to the rear along the campground road on the north edge of the meadow. You quickly leave the busy, noisy campground and are soon on a lovely wooded trail near Robinson Creek. There are open sections, parts through aspen groves, small stream crossings, dramatic craggy mountains, ancient slides, and a lake to cool your toes in. Enjoy!
