Walter Lotocky reviewed Bright Angel Trail to Bright Angel Campground and River Trail

I hiked the Bright Angel Trail from the Phantom Ranch on July 20, 2019. I started at 3:00am so that I can beat the heat of the day and be out of the Canyon by midday. It was a beautiful moonlit morning when I started out. It was rather warm that early but it cooled considerably as I got into the higher elevation. I got to Indian Garden at the perfect time. The sun was rising, but there was plenty of shade and lots of water. Hiking up on the Bright Angel Trail was a lot easier than hiking down on the South Kaibab Trail the day before. My knees were hurting but not enough to prevent me from enjoying the hike up the Bright Angel Trail. There was plenty of water on the trail, so I didn’t have to carry as much as I did going down the day before. There is NO water on the South Kaibab Trail the entire 7 miles down to the Colorado River.

The hardest part of this trail is that it is almost entirely down hill. It is very unforgiving on your knees. At 60 years old, my knees took a beating going down to the Phantom Ranch. It is a very challenging route, but also very rewarding with its panoramic views of the Canyon. Taking a dip in the Colorado River towards the end of the trail was very refreshing. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
