Walker Robins reviewed Lonesome Lake via Cascade Brook and Pemi Trails

A good afternoon hike from the Lafayette Place Campground. From the campground, follow the Pemi Trail (blue blazes) south to the Basin. Take a right (NW) at the Basin to take the Basin Cascade Trail (still blue blazes). There are some wonderful views of the cascades along this stretch. This will connect to the Cascade Brook Trail (white blazes)--angle to the right (N-NWish) and cross the Cascade Brook (you will pass a washed out bridge shortly before the crossing). The next 1.3 miles are steady uphill on pretty rocky path. You will pop out at Lonesome Lake. Head to the left to go around the lake. After going around the lake, you'll hit a bunch of trail markers. Follow the Lonesome Lake Trail (yellow blazes) towards Lafayette Place Campground (not the LL Trail that's going the other way). From there, you have a pretty dramatic descent over about 1.2 miles back to camp.

Brief trail leads to an observation deck, where you can look out over the Great Salt Plains from the north. A great place to view terns and sandpipers, among other shorebirds passing through the region.

Walker Robins reviewed Harold F. Miller Auto Trail

As with the Refuge's Nature Trail, the Auto Trail has some wonderful and unexpected scenery for northwest Oklahoma--wetland marshes and shorebirds.

This is a great little nature trail that takes you through some of the unique marshy wetlands of the Wildlife Refuge (at times it feels more like Louisiana than Oklahoma). The whole trail is a pleasure, filled with wildlife and vegetation and well-maintained, but the highlight is the observation deck overlooking Sand Creek Bay. In mid-July, we were able to see dozens of beautiful shore birds that, again, you'll be surprised to find in Oklahoma.
