the trail map makes no sense when you get to the site. it has you park on the side of the road and then hike up the same road until you get to the dam. lots of back and fourth to get to that 3.3 miles. there were a lot of campers in the area so it was a lot like just wondering around a strangers campsite. the old homes were cool but despite a sign begging people to tread lightly and treat the places with respect, people were smashing glass and behaving awfully. lots of out of towners and litter.

the parking area is private property and you get charged to park by a sketch dude. just passed the gate, it's state park land so it's a little frustrating that there is no free access. we only paid for the ghost town parking buy where able to walk to the river from one of the side trails after the gate for the ghost town. the ghost town trail was unbearably sunny the day we went with no shade until you went toward the cemetery. there are some structures to the right of the fork when you get to the coal cart. there is a subtle sign that says private property but we went about 1/4 mile passed and stayed on the trail. no shade on that fork nearly killed me but I get it's been unseasonably warm this time of year.

Do you like public urination, screaming children and people bathing in the river? then this trail is for you. I wish I was exaggerating when I say there were hundreds of people on this trail. the kind of people that listen to music from a speaker in their backpack, who loudly declare they are going to take a leak so don't look and who stop to gather in the middle of the trail to gawk and not let other hikers pass. not a single time along the trail were we out of ear shot of the people shouting to talk over the other people yelling to be heard over the sounds of the river. Children were everywhere, some unattended, all shouting. Many people were on the other side of the trail in the natural areas, whether it was a vain attempt to escape the crowds or urinate, I couldn't tell. it's a shame what people are doing to the treasured areas of our state.

nice short trail with some pretty surroundings. still some road noise and actually somewhat crowded even though it was a rainy day.

it's a shame this isn't tagged as an historic site, there are 1000s of years of history on the trails in this area.

I wish I could tag to see "tourists" it's a beautiful trail but maybe too close to Denver. I went on a Sat afternoon in the fall so maybe it was just folks looking to see the leaves change but it was filthy with people. It was a lot more like standing in a fast moving line at a movie theater than a hike. I couldn't sneeze without another hiker saying bless you.

nice trail, there were a LOT of rattlesnakes which was a bit unnerving. The area by the waterfall was filthy, people don't have to hike to see it and they were treating it like a waterpark. but the rest of the trail offers amazing views and interesting spots. FYI not a lot of shade on this trail so be prepared for heat if you go mid day.

exhausting. you go up hill 1400 feet in less than a mile... twice because it's an out and back trail. you will need to take frequent breaks on each uphill portion. the falls are beautiful. the saving grace is the trail cools off considerably on the downhill. not very many people and did not need to pay for parking/park entrance. lovely area but it was much more difficult than I was anticipating.

There is a lot to see on this trail. I recommend keeping your eyes peeled on the sides for worn paths to see artifacts. Watch out for spider webs stretching across the trail, there were alot. we were out for several hours and only saw two other people. The halfway point for the "loop" appears to no longer be accessable. you won't even realize you've gotten to that point because there is another trail that meets up with it and you feel like it is just winding to the left. Thankfully I checked my GPS and it showed we were wayyy off trail at one point so we were able to head back the way we came. we found the spot where the confusion happened. there is a large chest high tree fall and it didn't look like the trail continued on the other side of it. I would have climbed over it to explore but we had already gotten 2 miles off course and I didn't want to get lost again. Tree falls are common but they are trimmed back for the most part. i think the one that cuts off the trail has been there for years now. Because of this, we didn't get to see the engine. However we did get to see all of the other cool stuff along the way. Everything was beautiful.

This trail is for you if you like going uphill for 3+ miles in the sun without the sweet relief of shade or level ground between unecessarily long winding switchbacks with nothing more interesting to look at than thistle. once you manage to escape the traffic noise, you are treated with the sounds of the nearby gravel plant. All this while avoiding cyclists going downhill at 37 miles an hour around blind curves. You do get one nice view of red rocks and views of the city which make it look very tiny. I did see a deer from very far away. In summation, I was not a fan. Also it was very crowded for a weekday before 230pm.

this isn't a trail so much as a 4x4 road that leads to other trails. the rocks are all different sizes which means you have to look at your feet the whole time and not the scenery. the road is so wide that you aren't really in the trees and private property everywhere means you have to stick to the road only. the waterfalls are pretty though.

this isn't a loop, there is something wonky about the red line on the map. Also, it seemed like it was longer out and back but not by a whole lot. Those issues aside, it's a beautiful trail. some shade some sun, we started the trail across the street from the parking area, FYI it's a state park so there is a 7 dollar cash only fee if you don't have a pass. it was an easy trail, not many rocks and roots. to see the cabin, go past the boulders at the top of the incline following mule deer trail. the trail continues for quite some time after the cabin, turning around at that point will probably be close to 4 miles total out and back. we did see a lot of other hikers but it was summer, noon on a Saturday. Good mix of evergreen, aspen and wildflowers.

this is the trail you have to take to start the Red rocks or Morrison slide trail. it used to be a mile loop but the other half is bike only which kinda stinks. This trail is cool because the old cemetery is visible but it gets vandalized a lot. please be respectful.

really bummed there are no dogs allowed. it's beautiful, shady and sunny, interesting sights and wildflowers. Roaring river and meadows. but there is a LOT of horse excrement all over the trail and parts do smell like a barn as a result. They are also VERY strict about park boundaries and staying on trail. it's like the retirement community of trails. there are a lot of tables but no nearby trash bins so not a great picnic spot either. it really is beautiful though.

um.. I don't know where the Google maps took us to but it was not this trail. we ended up in a real cool place though that might have been the Montezuma ghost town. there were a lot of campers but 4th weekend, what do you expect.
