Tracy Zagar reviewed Talapus and Olallie Lakes Trail

Trail is well maintained, especially from the trailhead to Talapus Lake. Just a few muddy spots left. The switchbacks allow for a low-moderate incline. I managed to have a few solitary minutes at both lakes before other groups arrived, it was very peaceful and the lakes are beautiful. The trail traffic picked up considerably midday and parking is limited, so arrive early if you can.

Follow the directions on the WTA site, Google maps will send you the wrong way! Follow the trail along an old road until you come to an opening with Mount Rainier in your face and a small "trail" sign on the right. The incline becomes very steep at this point as you switchback up, all the while enjoying incredible views of Rainier and the surrounding peaks. Might be best to leave strong willed dogs (from experience), small children, or anyone afraid of heights at home. The steep section is mostly loose dirt and rocks, so take care especially on the way down. After the switchbacks, you will meander through brush and wild flowers. Keep following the narrow, often overgrown pathway until you come to a short, but steep area to the top of the ridge line and the fire lookout building will come into view.
I saw 2 people and their dogs at the lookout, but didn't pass anyone else the entire hike. The 360 views were amazing! My only complaint was being swarmed with massive flies at the top. I also saw 2 marmots along the way, who called back and forth to each other as my dog and I approached.
Overall, awesome, short hike with beautiful views!

Started early on a Wednesday morning, only saw a couple other people on the way in and had the lake to myself for a little while. The trip took just under 4 hours, with time spent at the lake. Like others have said, the trail is very muddy, so be prepared for that. The incline level was moderate with plenty of flat and easy incline sections mixed in with the steeper parts; not too easy, not too difficult. I'm glad I went early and on a weekday, because the trail traffic picked up significantly after 11am and, when I got back to the parking lot, a school bus was dropping off 20+ middle school age kids. The entire hike is beautiful and peaceful, but I imagine it can get very busy!

Easy, well maintained trail. Unfortunately went on a cloudy day and didn't see much of a view. Would go back.

Hiked 6/4/16. We started our hike on a clear morning at about 3:20am (with headlamps), found the cairn and "MT WA" tree carving as the trail markers. The trail is in good condition with a few wet areas and small streams and fallen trees to cross over. We carried a map and confirmed as we went that we stuck to the Mt WA trail, as it intersects with the Great Wall trail a few times. This trail does not utilize very many switch backs, so the uphill often feels relentless, though there are a few nice spots to stop and rest and enjoy the views along the way. We paused close to the top at an east and north facing viewpoint to watch the sunrise over the Cascades, the view here is incredible. We then continued up to the top to rest, make coffee, and eat some breakfast. On this clear day, we had a perfect view of Mount Rainier and could just make out Tacoma in the distance. The actual summit is just a bit further up the trail where the tower is, but the views are mostly blocked by trees. The only bad thing about our trip is that it was very buggy at the top. The trip down was nice as well, since we had hiked most of the trail up in the dark. We didn't see any other people until almost 7am, as we were making our way down the trail, and by 8am it was starting to get crowded. We got back to the parking lot by 8:30-8:45am, and the lot was almost full. I would definitely recommend this hike, either during the day or as a sunrise/sunset hike, especially on a clear day, because the views were spectacular!

Not too many people on the trail on a chilly, cloudy, end of September day. The trail was a bit muddy and slick in spots. The lake itself is nice and there are a few places to sit and relax for a bit. Reminded me a lot of Lake 22, which is nearby.

Hike is moderate difficulty and the views at the top were great once the clouds lifted. We made the mistake of going on Memorial Day, so it was very, very crowded on the trail and at the top.

Nice hike. We didn't have enough time to go all the way to Lake Serene, but the falls were a great place to stop and enjoy the view.

Very challenging, but rewarding hike. We didn't pack quite enough water. Around the lake was a bit crowded with everyone stopping to swim and enjoy lunch. The hike to the lake is seemingly endless switchbacks and uphill, but the view of the lake is just magnificent.

Great hike with a group of friends and our dog. The lake is great to cool off in and eat some lunch. Plenty of room around the lake to cool off. Some areas of the trail are rocky and unsteady, so be cautious in these spots.
