Tyler Remmel reviewed Sky Pond Trail

I normally avoid heavily-trafficked trails, but this one is worth wading past people (even when so few are familiar with trail etiquette). Scrambling up Timberline Falls is a unique experience, to say the least. Sky Pond was so great that we almost needed to be pried away from it after a couple hours. It's not a difficult trail before the climb up to the falls, and even that isn't that bad.

I know it's at 5 stars, but this trail is still underrated. I went to Two Medicine to try and avoid the smoke elsewhere in the park, so was a little disappointed when I awoke to a haze. Not even the smoke could prevent this from being a great hike; I went clockwise, and it was nice to have the lake views under morning light. Added the No Name Lake and Old Man Lake spurs, since they are short and you are so close already. 17.6 miles is a short estimate -- park brochure lists at 18.8 mi, spurs made it close to an even 20. Took 7-7.5 hours.

Keeping this on my to-do list for the future, because I'm sure it's even better outside wildfire season.

I'm not sure if they were flies or mosquitoes (they weren't biting), but not even they could prevent this from being a great hike.

Started at sunrise, which would have been great -- but it was made even better when a boy played a sonata on trumpet as the sun rose over the canyon. Probably not a great idea to try making it down to Plateau Point if you don't get an early start; we did the route in 6 hours, and it was already very difficult because of the heat in the last 3 miles.

Great views even on a cloudy day. Hiked out via Pinnacles Trail (clockwise), adding Emory Peak spur and then continuing on toward the South Rim via Boot Canyon. I did not see photos prior to the hike, so it was an added thrill when the rim came out of nowhere after hiking through a meadow. Also thrilling: watching thunderstorms develop over the desert, and racing them back to Chisos Basin. 19.8 miles for the whole route, according to my phone, in about 8 hours.

An excellent all-around hike. Great terrain variety, almost everything you can imagine on one hike except waterfalls. (The midpoint of the Merritt Ridge loop drops you to a surprisingly remote spot on the lake.)

Went in June last year. Road was closed from Brainard lake, which meant a long asphalt hike to get to the trailhead. We encountered some trouble about a mile in -- we weren't able to find the next blaze, and there weren't a clear set of footprints in the snow to follow, so we had to turn back. Would like to go back later in the year when snow has melted and trail is no longer buried.

Only mistake I made was rushing out of the gate when the trail is paved near Happy Isles. The granite stair steps would take your breath away if it weren't for the breathtaking views. Rather than turning around and taking the JMT back down, I continued along the Panoramic Trail -- which I would highly suggest. If you're interested in a long day loop hike with continuous views, combine the Mist, Panorama and Four Mile trails.

Trail is quite short, but doable even if Rim Drive is closed. It's a bit of a jog walking along the road from North Junction, but the turnouts along the way (and easy off-road treks to the top of the rim from the road) leave you with plenty to look at along the way. Make sure to take your time at the bottom of the trail before heading back up, the solitude of the lake up-close is unparalleled.

Took the shuttle boat across Jenny Lake to be able to shorten hike to Lake Solitude. Hiking through Cascade Canyon is relatively flat, but it gets steeper as you climb to Lake Solitude. Saw one moose in the canyon, and a number of marmots on the way up to and back from the lake.
