Tyler Pumphrey reviewed Mount Whitney via Mount Whitney Trail

What a beast! Yet this hike is also the most rewarding and my all time favorite hike to date. It is best to hike this one over multiple days of possible, preferably over three days so the 11 mike decent after a 5 mike ascent doesn’t kill you. Overall I cannot wait to get back to this mountain sometime next year.

One of my all time favorite hikes. Challenging, yet not insane. The views of Yosemite Valley are as good as they get. A must for anyone who is in Yosemite who is up to the challenge.

Very challenging, yet rewarding trail. Personally I find it best to split this into a two day backpacking trip due to length, however it can easily be done in a single day. The switchbacks at the beginning of the hike were easily the most difficult part of the trail due to steepness. However most of the trail is very peaceful and not incredible steep.

Not an incredibly difficult trail with very high payout in terms of views.

A lot of work for not enough reward. First off the hike is closer to 15-16 miles round trip. The parking was miserable on a weekend. Had to park 1.5 miles from the trail head. So get there very early, like 6:00 AM early. Most Blogs claim this is the peak you should start on if you are doing the So Cal Six Pack of Peaks. Personally I found this more difficult that Mt. Baldy due to the length and never ending climb. The summit is anticlimactic with being civilized. However it was amazing having an ice cream sunday at the summit of a difficult hike so that was awesome! When climbing from the east, as this hike promotes, most of the climbing is done in the last few miles which made it difficult. While it did feel great to cross of this beast from the So Cal Six Pack of Peaks challenge, I personally will not be returning to this mountain anytime soon when I find the other mountains in that challenge far more enjoyable.

A moderate hike with of course an amazing opportunity to view the abandoned mine. For me however the highlight of this hike was on the far eastern part of the hike when you're on the side of the mountain looking out towards the plains of Joshua Tree. There is something special about not seeing anything manmade for miles and miles.

A very steep, challenging, but none the less rewarding hike. This was one of the most difficult trails I have attempted so far, if not the most. You never stop climbing except for a few areas around the Little Round alley Campground. However the views from the top of San Jacinto are some of the most rewarding you will ever get. The trail is well marked for the most part but maintained moderately since it is a moderately traveled trail. You will encounter downed trees on the trail occasionally to where you need to find a way around them. Now while the hike up is really tough, honestly the hardest part is the hike down. My knee started giving out on the way down from the mountain to the point where we ended our hike almost 2 hour later than we expected. Overall an incredible hike and one I strongly recommend to those who are up for the challenge.

A fantastic trail to experience the high Sierra's. I personally chose this trail for the high altitude training for peaks like Mt. Whitney. The trail isn't too terribly difficult due to its relatively short length. Summit Lake is so incredibly crystal clear at the top and really refreshing after a long hike! Personally I continued a little past the lake and went to the ridge on the left of the trail to overlook some of the most fantastic scenery I have ever seen for lunch. Overall a fantastic trail with some of the best scenery I have ever seen.

A tough, yet rewarding hike in an easily accessible area for LA and Orange County. The trail overall is pretty exposed, especially on the Devil's Backbone portion. I recommend doing the trail counterclockwise instead of the direction the trail points you in this map where the climb is not as steep.

A nice and short trail to incredible scenery. The lake feels very isolated from the world and stunningly beautiful.

A difficult but rewarding hike. One of the best I have done in the Appalachians. Can be very strenuous and steep at times. But the views are worth every second of it. Especially the weeping rocks you encounter on the way up to the falls.
