Deborah Turcotte reviewed Barlow Point Trail

The trail starts narrow but soon improves. Just after the narrow section in the beginning, we wondered whether to go straight onto a more cleared trail ahead or switchback to another trail. Turning onto switchback is the correct trail up. While this trail isn't difficult, it does require attentiveness with the roots and rocks and steep sections. At the top there is a nice rock foundation, where the former tower sat, to have a snack. There are two view spots to walk out to from the rocks. One, you will see a glimpse of Big Four if it is a clear day. The other...the valley. Our favorite part of the entire hike was that EVERYONE else was hiking Monte Cristo area and we were all alone even on a summer Saturday.

In spite of the crowds of people who don't know how to respect the quietness of nature the view at the ledge is worth it. Make sure you do it on a clear day so you get to enjoy the wonderful panoramic view.

We will look forward to doing this hike on a clearer day. Even though we were right by Mount Baker at Artist Point we couldn't see it nor Mt. Shuksan. Wildflowers were peaking out and it was not a strenuous hike.

We did only Lower Lena. It was a nice hike but there wasn't anything spectacular compared to other hikes in Washington. Maybe the entire Lena Lakes hike would raise the star level.

If you need a quick and short "get out of the house" after a long winter hike, then this is a good one to get you into the mood for doing more hiking. We did this one a second time when the lake was still frozen in January.

I disagree that this trail is mainly for rockclimbing. It was a great hike with lots of diversity and not just following a trail. The first part is forested and the trail includes roots and rocks. It took us a while to find the best and safest means of crossing the stream since at the time we hiked the water was high and swift. It was good that we had waterproof boots. Hopefully the huge log that my Army Ranger son hauled and tossed across the racing waters will be helpful to others that follow. After the stream, there were some steep switchbacks that were in open sun. It is worth making sure you do this hike on a clear day since the views were gorgeous.

This hike we have done three times so far. It is a great hike to show out of state visitors the panoramic beauty that we love. It also gives you the opportunity to be up close to Mt. Rainier without hiking Mt. Rainier itself. On a clear day you can even see Mount Baker in the distance. In July-August the wildflowers are out (as well as mosquitos, so have bug spray handy). We saw mountain goats. You can choose whichever direction you want to go since it is a loop. Our only disappointment is that we have to leave our best hiking partner, our little dog, at home since National Parks don't allow dogs on the trail. We had to cross some snow banks, so if you have any in your party that would be uncomfortable with that then reconsider. Have fun on this gorgeous 5.5 mile moderate hike!
