Fantastic easy hike! I agree with other reviews. Muddy meadow early in the season, great for dogs who love the water. Listed as a loop, but we didn’t see where the loop went after the lake, so we made it an out-and-back. Also, the description here says that dogs must be leashed, but I didn’t see any signs saying this, so watch out for off-leash dogs. (Most) everyone we encountered with dogs were nice enough to leash their dog when they saw us.

Really love this trail. Beautiful walk through redwoods and although I don’t generally like intense inclines, I think they’re fun on this trail. Can be muddy in the spring. Make sure you know your route since there are a bunch of connecting trails that you can accidentally get on. Lots of off leash dogs.

Heed the warnings in other reviews about knowing where the TH is!! If you click “directions” from the AllTrails app, it doesn’t take you all the way to the TH (it takes you to a place to park if you have a low clearance vehicle.) We ended up walking a ways down the wrong road because we didn’t know which one led to the trail. Once we figured out which way to go, we drove our Subaru the rest of the way to the trail. The trail itself is really great: low traffic, dogs on leash allowed, and beautiful views of Shasta (if the clouds aren’t covering the mountain.)

Great hike with my dog! Didn’t see many other people, and the view of Castle Lake from Heart Lake is amazing. Be careful if you come in the winter, as the snow and ice makes this more of a “hard” hike than “moderate”. The trail was packed down so snowshoes aren’t necessary (as mentioned in another review). There’s a small stream to cross at the beginning, with a precarious piece of plywood over it, so be prepared for that.

Great trail for on-leash dog hiking! We walked out 5 miles and back 5 miles from the north end. It was open and exposed the whole time (no walking in forested areas—that’s farther south) with a wide trail and beautiful views of the hills and the nearby bay. There is a point 1.2 miles from the trailhead where it’s unclear whether you should go through a gate and continue left or walk left on the current side of the fence — go through the gate!! The misleading path is a cattle path. Speaking of which — the cows can be extremely *friendly*, thinking you are bringing them food. If you have dogs (especially heelers) make sure you’re following the leash rule for their safety. It can be INCREDIBLY windy, so make sure you dress accordingly. I plan on going back and trying an out-and-back from the southern end.

Great way to walk by the beach without getting all sandy (trail is on the cliff above the beach, but you can access the beach by a steep side trail). Dogs are supposed to be on leash, but many are off (though the trail is wide enough to avoid those). Beautiful wildflowers when the succulents are blooming. Windy, so make sure to wear a windbreaker and ear-warmer. Plenty of benches to stop and enjoy the view, or eat a picnic lunch.

Great place to bring a dog. Knocked off one star because the trails were poorly labeled at some places. Redwoods are large and beautiful. The trail is very exposed for a long section so don't forget sunblock!

Great variation in scenery - forest and exposed areas. Wide trails. Dogs are allowed off leash on the East ridge trail. Do loop clockwise so you go downhill on Canyon trail
