This was a great hike but it’s an ass kicker.
WARNING: As others have written, The trail distance info listed here as well as on the trailhead markers ARE INCORRECT!!!!
It’s exactly 4.2 HARD miles over Headley pass to the lake. Then another .7 miles to the summit.
Plan on 5 miles EACH WAY and spending the night at the lake is a good call.

Route finding experience is suggested but the trail is failed well marked with cairns on the boulder fields where it’s easy to get lost. While on the boulder fields keep your eyes peeled for these cairns and other hikers. We ran into several people who lost their way.

The trip was amazing but very crowded with helicopters & mountain rescue teams looking for the lost hiker.

I led a group of 5 guys up this trail 1st weekend of July 2018. The Forest Service rd was blocked just past yellow aster butte trail head do we had to hike the 2 miles up the rd to the twin lakes trail head. The trail is well maintained but had a lot of snow right from twin lakes. At least 50% of the trail was covered in ice or snow so this became an over night trip. About a mile past twin lakes the snow fields become steep & icy. Route finding & mountaineering skills are needed to cross them and there were 2 or 3 avalanche chutes to navigate around. We made camp 500 below the summit on the only snow free flat patch we could find. Amazing views from camp. Sunday morning we made our way to the summit. Breathtaking views from the top. Bugs were not too bad.
If you’re doing this trail when snow levels are down to twin lakes, you WILL need ice axes & crampons. We wouldn’t have made it without them.

We use this trail for hunting. Wasn’t much animal activity this year so we decided to climb it to the top. No trail markers, not maintained at all. You’ll need a compass or gps or you will get lost. And the so called “trail” is not the best route for getting up. It’s fine for getting down but there are easier routes along open fields for getting up. This is now mostly a game trail and as such its extremely thick brush in places, very steep in some places and very lightly traveled by humans except during hunting season. The views from the top are pretty good but not worth the effort in my opinion.

Great hike to train on if you plan to climb baker. It is difficult along the ridge line. But so worth it. Depending on your conditioning & firmness level, it will take you 3 to 3-1/2 hrs to get up from the trailhead and 2 to 2-1/2 to get down.

Great day hike. A little scrambling toward the top and lots of snow traveling.

Great hike. Be prepared though. Ice ax & crampons are helpful depending on the snow levels. Trail towards the summit gets vague. Look for markers. Views at the top are spectacular.

Super simple, flat. Trails run along sandy, grassy & wooded terrain. Great picnicking spots.
