We started our hike around sunrise from the Rim Trail adjacent to the North Campground, going clockwise. Saw maybe 6 people in first 2.5 hours of the hike so really like that benefit of an early start although it was 39 degrees so a bit chilly. Lots of early morning shadows complicated photo taking.
Took 4 hrs to completely the Fairyland Loop trail with lunch at the Tower Bridge and a million stops for photos.
Tip: Park at the visitor center overflow parking then walk through the North Campground just past loop “c”, taking a left up the short trail between campsites 60 & 61 to reach the Rim Trail.

The short hike is suited for just about all ages and abilities. Very crowded (parking lot full) at sunrise but less crowded by mid-morning. I recommend going later in the morning because you can still get some great photos of the canyon through the arch without the crowds!

Tony Delgado reviewed Aztec Butte Trail

We arrived just after sunrise yesterday and had the Butte all to ourselves. From atop Aztec Butte you’ll have super views of the surroundings to include canyons in the distance. We saw a herd of mule deer wander by the base of the butte as we sat on top. This is not a hard hike, but if you have issues with your knees or ankles you should not do this as there are many sections at pretty steep “all fours climbing” going up the butte and some “scoot on you butt” sections coming down. Don’t forget to stop by the granary!

As mentioned before, there is no sign from main road telling you the side road leads to the White Rim trail, only a sign stating picnic area. This road is on the left before you get to Grand View. While the walk is easy, it was SO worth it with good canyon views on the tiny “peninsula in the sky” it ends on. My wife and I really enjoyed it. We saw maybe 5-6 people on that trail yesterday.

Tony Delgado reviewed Grandfather Mountain Trail

My wife and I hiked Grandfather Mountain trail this morning from the beginning at the trailhead at the swinging bridge to Calloway Peak and back. Hands down the most demanding and exciting hike we have done in the Upstate SC and Western NC area. Took about 4 hours but we walk fast. If you are afraid of heights this is not for you. The painted blue blazes could use another coat right about now.

This was an enjoyable hike today. Favorite part was paralleling and crossing the stream numerous times as part of the well marked trail. Will be great when the blackberries in the meadow are ripe. This was a moderate, not hard, hike

Hiked this yesterday. Up and back from Rough Ridge parking lot on the Parkway about 1.3 mi per my Fitbit. Hike diminished slightly by clouds obscuring most of the views. Was also a bit bummed that the Rhododendron were not blossoming this time of year, likely due to all the rain recently. But the trail was in good shape & there were some nice rock outcrops, We particularly liked the wooden boardwalk that walked us through the ecosystem and explained some of it. On a normal June day that was sunny and the Rhododendron blooming, it would be a 5 star short hike.

Tony Delgado reviewed Raven Cliff Falls and Dismal Trail Loop

My wife and I hiked this trail today and just loved it. In the fall, with most of the leaves off the trees, you can see the various streams and falls from a distance. We did the loop counterclockwise, heading down the Dismal Trail then back up the Naturaland Trust Trail. We really liked the primitive quality of the Dismal and Naturaland trails. Got off the trail twice coming up the Naturaland trail because we were not paying close enough attention. There are many small waterfalls to see, two cool bridges (one made of fallen trees and the other a suspension bridge), and a section of trail at the base of a very tall rock cliff. The ascent back up Naturaland was no joke, so be prepared for some steep uphill trail segments.. the only downside was that Gum Gap and Raven Cliff Falls Trails seemed relatively boring by comparison on the final leg of the hike. We will be back with friends!
