Tom Reed reviewed Parkers Creek Loop, American Chestnut land Trust

Nice hike. Well marked and well maintained. I plan on coming back later in the spring to see everything in foliage. I also hiked the Horse Swamp Trail which is a 3 mile out and back trail that provides you an overlook of the bay.

Well maintained trail that has enough elevation changes to give you a good workout but nothing that can't be completed for anyone in fair shape. You can hike just the lower trail or add in the upper trail for an extra 2.5 miles. Today was extremely foggy but there are a couple of overlooks (of what I couldn't tell). Total numbers of miles: 8.0 but I added in a little bit of the Catoctin Trail (blue blazes)

Nice hike with some elevation gain and some rock scrambling. Should be beautiful in the summer. The trail is marked with blue blazes and starts at the Kelly run Natural Area which has plenty of parking and potties.

Walked most of the trail during an overcast, chilly day. Easy trail to hike (fairly well marked and no major elevation gains) and run. Not much to see in the winter but probably pretty in the summer.

Started at the visitor center and used the Link Trail to meet up to main trail. Nice hike, nice view of the fall foliage. The climbs were not too bad but not for the new hiker.

Lots of short trails that you can combine into a long hike.

    Tom Reed reviewed Fort Washington

The Park is free in the winter months (we went in October). The Fort was interesting but watching to bald eagles soaring over the Fort was even better. We hike along the river trail (wasn't well maintained) and then looped back to the Fort along the park rode. Around 3 miles in total. Nice place to get some American history and a good walk.

From the visitor center you can drive back up the road to the Big Fill hike which takes you along the original route of the railroad to where they first had a trestle of the valley and then later filled it in. It was a nice peaceful hike (only ones on the trail) with a few signs explaining what you were seeing.

Nicely signed trail that explains the geology of the area and why the creek is warm all year round. if you want to go for a longer hike you can cross the walking bridge below the parking lot and walk up the river on dirt road. This road intersects the gravel road after a mile or so which you can use to walk back to your car.

Nice hike around some beaver ponds. If was the perfect hike for a five-year old who made it the entire way. We stopped at lake to throw some rocks and then at the ponds for some stick throwing. The last third of the trail is through some meadows which had a large herd of pronghorn sheep.

I really enjoyed this hike (maybe because I was hiking it with my oldest daughter). The trail is actually about 3.5 miles long if you hike around the crater which I highly recommend since there are informational signs along the way. The signs do a nice job explaining the volcano's eruption and subsequent weathering. The hike up is a bit strenuous but not too bad if you take your time. We hiked it mid morning so it was still fairly cool.

Parked at the Nature Center and took the West Ridge Trail to the Washington Zoo. Just a little over 3 miles one way. The zoo is free but the parking is $22 a car. If you don't mind walking, park free in the park.

There are a number of trails in Greenbrier State Park to include the Big Red Trail - the longest trail in the park at 4.5 miles. The trail starts down along the lake and makes a nice long loop on the west side of the park. I would rate the trail as moderate with a couple of hills to transverse but nothing too difficult. If you want, you can park on Route 40 where the AT has a parking spot and hike south along the trail until you get to the Bartman's Hill Trail (on the right) which will take you down into the park for a total of 7.5 miles. See attached link for a good map of the trails.

There are a number of hiking trails within the Susquehanna State Park you can hike so I recommend you print off the trail map from their web page. I hiked the Susquehanna Trail from Lapidum and then came back using the Land of Promise Trail. There are enough trail in the park to keep you busy for a day.

Very easy trail to walk with the possibility of seeing bald eagles along the way. You can extend your hike by taking some of the trails within the Susquehanna State Park (southern end of the trail) or you can hike north on the Mason Dixon Trail.

Tom Reed reviewed Paseo del Morro

This trail starts outside Fuerte San Felipe del Morro (the Morro Fortress). Before you go into the Fort entrance head to the right to find the start of the trail. You will walk around the base of the fortress to the west side of the peninsula and then head down to the Red Gate. You can enter the city there or continue on the trail down to the harbor. Take sunscreen since there is no shade. Water is also a good idea.

Plenty of parking but would get there fairly early since it can fill up in high tourist season. The trail up to the tower is all uphill but well maintained. If you want, you can continue on the Mt. Britton Spur which will connect you to the El Yunque trail (turn left) which will take you to the top of the mountain. Fantastic views on a clear day. Beware, you are under the trees for most of the hike but you can still get a lot of sun so apply sunscreen.

Todd Trail connects the Tuscarora Trail and the Standing Stone Trail (SST) via a very steep ascent (or descent). I used this trail to make a 9 mile loop trail hike from Cowans Gap State Park. You can head north on Tuscarora Trail to Todd Trail and go up the mountain to SST. Head south until you get to the Horsetrail (an even steeper trail) back to Tuscarora Trail.
