Tom Whin reviewed Lone Lake Trail

I did this on Aug 21 and saw no one else. To clear up where to start the hike....A few yards west of the Stevens TH drive the road that heads south. 0.3 mile up the road switchbacks to the right and there’s a wide area to park. The trail goes south from this curve. If you continue on the road be warned that there is no place to turn around for about a mile ( I did explore this.). About 1.1 mile up there is a waterfall and a side path leads to its base. The lake is 2 miles from where I parked . Trail was in good shape but overgrown in spots. Did see raspberries but no huckleberries yet. The grade is moderate and it took me about 90 min with photo stops to reach the lake. Overall a nice hike for exercise and solitude.

Tom Whin reviewed Moose Lake Loop

I did the loop today (Aug 6) which fitbit counted as 7.5 mi. I did it clockwise hitting the lake first then climbing Moose Mt. Took just over 4 hrs with stops for snack, lunch, and photos. It was fairly easy except for ascending and descending Moose Mt. which had some steep stretches. Awesome views at lake and along the mountain ridge. Too early for huckleberries but bushes are aplenty along much of this hike. The trail was very overgrown and bushwhacking was required in a few areas. Road to the TH is rough for the last 3 miles and it’s slow going if you want to protect your tires.

Did this on Aug 2 and had the trail to myself. Very quiet and peaceful. Trail was in good shape . It hasnt rained in weeks so no problem in crossing creeks. First 0.9 is uphill and peaks at a bench. Then down to the creek. Meadow and campsites were at 1.8 mi. I turned around at 3 mi where there is a junction sign. Both trails from there appeared unmaintained and overgrown. Overall a nice hike in mostly forest and some meadow.

When Siri says you’ve arrived at the TH take the right fork off of 202. Potholes and ruts but doable in a car if you take it slow.

3.7 mi on my fitbit with 2100 ft gain. Took me 2 hrs plus. Trail is in excellent condition. Some steep grades but I agree with moderate rating. Views would be superb but for the smoke from fires. Train horns are continuous.

Tom Whin reviewed Fernan Lake Natural Area

Very short and easy. Nice that it is so close to town. Trail partly is in trees and shady but nearer trailhead is exposed and was hot today. I look forward to doing this in winter with cleats. No one else there while we hiked.

Did this on Jan 31 and very little snow was present. Lots of mud though sort of like it would be in March. Very nice foresty hike and if you wander off the upper part of the loop you can find some views to the SE. With some exploring off trail I racked up 3.4 mi. Didn’t see anyone else.

Very nice hike in winter on weekdays when some solitude is possible. Currently trail is bare on south side by the lake. I use yak trax for trips on side trails to the top and for icy areas on the north side. Scenery is excellent in several places along the trails. Lots of various spur paths are present to mix up a routine when hiking this often.

Tom Whin reviewed Bud Howard aka Big Tree Trail

I did this hike today (Jan 29) and did not see anyone else. Description above is wrong. There is no river. RT to road is 6 miles. Big tree is about 1.5 mi from start. First part of trail was bare. Near top I was sinking up to my knees every once in a while. Spikes recommended for icy grades. Very nice views along route of Hayden Lake and mts north of Spokane.

Very nice trail. Switchbacks ease the elevation gain. Excellent viewpoints 2.8 and 3.0 mi up with the latter having benches for snacking and taking in the vista. The trail ends at a forest road 3.5 mi up. Popular with mountain bikers. Larches very colorful Oct 30.

Did this Oct 24 from the east side. Only ran into one other hiker. Trail well signed at the junctions. RT was 5 miles mostly easy with a few steep sections at the start and near the top. Various viewpoints along the trail were just as good as summit which has radio towers present. Overall nice hike fairly close to town.

Tom Whin reviewed Pyramid and Ball Lakes Trail

Very easy hike for the 1.5 miles to Pyramid Lake. We had to turn around near the top of the switchbacks before Ball as the days are getting shorter. Spectacular views from these switchbacks and here the grade is moderate. Last mile to TH is rough. Don't need 4WD but low slung cars may lose an oil pan. Still had plump huckleberries despite bushes turning red for fall.

Actually 6.4 mi RT. Excellent, shady, peaceful, and uncrowded. Fri of Labor Day weekend we were the only ones until almost back to TH. Mostly easy with some short stretches of moderate grades. We took the two right forks going up for less steepness and took the other segments returning to save time. No bug problem on Sept 1. Scenery at lake excellent with at least 2 very nice sites for backpacking.

Tom Whin reviewed Lake Darling and Mount Pend Oreille Loop

I did 52 out and back for fear that 161 would be impassable or indistiinct requiring serious backtracking. Round trip to the summit of Pend Oreille was 10.4 mi. I found the first 3 mi of hike easy, next mi moderate, and remaining mile plus strenuous to brutal. No others or bears were seen this day. Huckleberries were plentiful and literally across the trail. Forest road is fine for all vehicles to the TH. Views from the ridge and summit were excellent despite smoke from fires in Canada. Many bridges along the trail are dilapidated and collapsing as maintenance is lacking in this area.

Tom Whin reviewed Hub Lake and Hazel Lake

Excellent and definitely moderate with steep sections. We logged 3.6 according to two fitbits and 2000 ft elevation gain. Trail in excellent shape. Take exit 26 off I 90 then 6.2 mi on gravel road. TH obvious on right side.

Tom Whin reviewed St. Regis Lakes

Nice and fairly easy hike with huckleberries aplenty. Only negative was vegetation often growing over the trail. We parked at the chairlift just past the old RR grade. From there it was 1.4 mi to where road became a path. Then another 1.6 to the lake. Grade was easy except for last 0.7 to the lake. That part was moderate. Wildflowers were present in all of the open areas. Pretty easy access from I-90.

Tom Whin reviewed Scotchman Peak Trail

My fitbit logged 9.6 mi RT. I was on the trail 7 hrs enjoying awesome scenery. Could see WA, MT, and Canada. No goats seen today but the summit was overrun with flies. Had to retreat down a little to eat. Bring extra water. I was drinking a lot even downhill as much of the trail is exposed.

Trail had a few steep sections and was at times confusing near the end with many spur paths and no signage. Excellent scenery and overall a very pleasant hike.

Tom Whin reviewed Mount Kit Carson Trail

Did this at 7AM on Sunday and I was the only one parked at TH and on the trail the whole 80 minutes the hike took. Views from the summit are excellent. Trail was very good and obvious the whole way. Bug spray still is recommended for flies.

I give it 5 because I live close by. Did it this morning and the trail displayed on this map was quite busy mostly tourists. Luckily I encountered not one soul on the summit trail which is displayed on Tubbs site map but not here. Fine by me.

Tom Whin reviewed Settlers Grove of Ancient Cedars Trail

Would give 5 stars but trail is only open for 0.7 mile. Huge cedars are very impressive esp ones that toppled from the fire. Part that is open is very nice and workers did a great job removing a large number of downed trees.

Tom Whin reviewed Liberty Lake Loop Trail

Trail was in excellent shape. Did the loop and very few others were seen after the cedar grove. Good cardio on the switchbacks after the falls.
