Tick Magnet reviewed Indian Kill Nature Preserve Trail

Walked to the first falls today from the Hecheltown Rd. parking area. The trail was in good shape and reasonably dry. They've done some work on the steps climbing away from the dam and added some steps on the blue trail at the steep hill. The steps ease the grade and make climbing a lot easier.

There's some pretty good beaver activity going on just upstream from the dam. The trail before the dam is high and dry now, but another foot or two and it'll be under water.

Fall colors are at their peak.

The trail was in great shape and I made the 2 mile hike without too much effort. The flooded beaver dam wasn't an issue as I was able to rock hop across the outlet. The big pines are always impressive.

Parking is on private land. Please respect the landowners generosity.

We walked to Jockeybush en-route to a bushwhack to Iron Lake. The trail was wet and muddy, but not a problem. The middle half of the trail is a big seep and always wet. The lower and upper end were great! The creek crossing was a little sporty on wet rocks.

Take a few minutes and explore the fisherman's path to the two designated campsites on the north shore of the lake. The view is glorious and there's some nice places to sit and enjoy the scenery.

Beautiful summer afternoon for a hike. The bright sun and cool breeze made for an enjoyable walk to Lock 19. We saw several blue herons and a huge snapping turtle in the old canal.

The only drawback today was the copious amount of goose poop in several locations along the path. There was so much that it smelled like the poultry barn at the county fair.

One of my favorite short hikes in this neck of the woods. There's a little elevation gain at the start, but overall, it's a very tame route. It's very kid friendly as well.

The woods were dry on our hike, so the big wet spot just before the junction with the abandoned snowmobile trail, wasn't an issue. There was a little blow-down, but easy to negotiate. The pond was looking good in the morning sun.

My daughter and I parked at the Park Lot in Ft. Hunter and walked the Towpath trail to Empire Lock and then returned to the Park Visitors Center via the Woodchuck Trail. It was a nice 1.75 miles loop hike. The recently re-modeled VC was beautiful. The exhibits were well done and the staff extremely helpful. Trail conditions were very good; well mowed and clear of any obstructions.

This trail was recently re-opened after a closure of about a year. The park did some trail work in the down time which included re-surfacing and scaling some of the cliffs. Stairs, boardwalks and trail surface were all in good shape. Great to be back "below the cliffs".

Took my 85 year old Mom on a short walk to the Hawkwood Estate site. The trail was wide, dry and exceptionally easy for her to walk. What a great little expedition!

Hiked this yesterday morning from the Garnet Hill Lodge Ski Shack. Nice easy trail through the GHL property to State Land. Trail up the hill was pretty tame and in great shape. There was no blow down and only a few muddy spots. The view from the top was spectacular. We stopped at GHL for lunch, what a treat. This would be a great family hike.

Hiked this on May 6th. This was my first hike after moving back to NY in 2012. The "new" trail up the final ascent of Cathead is very nice. The traverse trail to Thomas is as wild as I remember it. False summits, rock walls and old logging roads; it's all good. Sad to see the cabin on Thomas gone, but I understand. Great day to be alive!

Walked the tow path down to Lock 19. Trail was in good shape. Plenty of people out enjoying a blustery day. Tons of migrating waterfowl.

    Very icy today!

Traction aids are a must until we get more snow.

Nice snowshoe loop today. We walked in on the red trail to the junction and then took the yellow trail to the designated tent site. A short .3 miles jaunt across the lake brought us to the lean-to. Unfortunately previous users had littered the lean-to with hemlock boughs and started a small fire on the floor of the lean-to. We cleaned it up and there was no major damage.

Had a nice snowshoe in. The trail was a little rutted from people bare-booting. We had lunch at one of the remote points. Didn't see a soul all day; very peaceful.

My first trip here today. There were a lot of trails to follow and they seem a little confusing, but you really can't get lost. However, the map was very helpful.

Parking at Lock 7 upper lot provided easy access to the park. There is some up and down and the trail was a little icy today. The trail network leaves the State Park and eventually connects with Niskayuna's Blatnick Park.

Sorry Nathan, I got this location confused with another one when I did the write-up. You're right, the trail doesn't go all the way around the Vly. If I remember, there is also a small swampy area at the north end of the pond that you have to by-pass to get to the other trail.

A very beautiful walk here at mid-day. The trail around the pond was in fine shape and the fall woods were great. The view from the outlet dam was spectacular.

Nice day for a walk today. Trails were in great shape. The only drawback was the amount of poison ivy. At least it was in it's full fall color and was easy to spot. The problem was it was everywhere. We checked out the Saratoga PLAN letter box station and made an entry in the book. Looks like the mice chewed through the plastic box as everything inside was damp.

Walked this on a warm and windy 240th Anniversary of the 2nd Battle of Saratoga. The grassy trail was wet from the morning rain, but was well mowed and presented no worries for ticks. The interpretative signs along the old Champlain Canal were interesting. Migrating warblers flitted about us as we walked along the old canal. Overall, a very enjoyable little walk in a seldom visited part of the battlefield.

Took a nice walk here this morning. Trails were in great shape and there were plenty of birds to keep me occupied. I even saw a bald eagle flying overhead. Too cool.

Took my daughter here on a short walk after school today. The crew here has done a great job this summer placing planking over wet spots and adding new bridges to the Blue Trail. A very enjoyable walk in the woods.
