We camped there this summer and lucked out with beautiful weather. We 4-wheeled over from St. Elmo over Tin Cup Pass which was a kick. Fishing was good too. Would definitely recommend it for a nice camping trip. Beautiful views!

We did a backpacking trip at the end of July to this beautiful destination. The weather was perfect, the trail was beautiful, and the lakes and surrounding scenery were stunning. Although I took my fly rod, I forgot my reel so no fishing! The only drawback was the number of people there. We went on a Monday and a slew of people were coming down the trail after a weekend trip. There were still others up there but we were glad not to have gone on a weekend. It's a stunning destination worthy of your time.

We did an overnight backpack trip in July which was very nice. The weekend we went was very hot which was a factor in the hike up but it was enjoyable none the less. Sadly there were a lot of dead trees standing and on the ground which was a bit of a detractor. However, the fishing was good with Brookies in the lower lake and Cutthroats in the upper lake. A nice destination worthy of your time.

Alex Hale reviewed Parsons Trail along Sycamore Canyon

With continued cold weather at home in Colorado, my wife and I decided to head south to warmer weather. A search on All Trails landed us on the Parsons Trail. We upgraded some backpacking gear and were ready to test run it. Arizona is plenty warm this time of year so we took the opportunity to make a trip of it. Good choice.

First, the road to the canyon. You do not need a 4wheel drive vehicle to get there. It is a bumpy dirt road but not a 4wheel jeep road. I wouldn’t exactly take your low profile sports car on it, but anything like a 2 wheel drive cross over would be just fine. Just take your time.

The steep drop into the canyon is brief and not difficult. Trekking poles come in handy with a backpack for balance so I’d recommend a pair of those. Day packers are fine without it. The start of the trail is easy and flat. After the first mile plus, the trail has sections that get rougher. Again, very doable. This is where you begin to see the red rock portion of the canyon which is majestic.

I must give a shoutout to the folks who carefully placed all the cairns particularly for the creek crossings which were not always intuitive on the back half of the canyon. Lots of fingers and false trails so definitely follow the cairns carefully. Creek crossings were also easier with trekking poles so, another plug to take a pair.

Once we got beyond the sign that lets you know you are allowed to camp, we found a nice sandy creek side spot. Plenty of space and a nice view of the canyon wall. Saw fish and a water turtle in the creek which was great. By chance, it was a full moon that night which lit the canyon like a spotlight. Pretty spectacular.

This was a very nice canyon backpack earning it a solid 4 stars. Enjoy!

This was a very beautiful hike. I would recommend it for the views, the unique terrain, and the very unique final destination! One thing of note; I do not believe this trail should be rated as 'Hard'. It is 'Moderate' at best. Even those in fair shape should be able to hike this trail pretty readily. There are truly more difficult trails around that would better warrant a 'Hard' rating.

Although the hike was enjoyable, there were two issues of note. The 5.1 mile out and back is incorrect. Its 5 miles each way. Secondly, the difficulty rating is inaccurate. Most of the hike is easy with one hard section that was steep. I would call this trail Moderate. Still a nice hike and worth doing.
