Update: I completed this trail last week. The meadow of wildflowers in the middle was fantastic! The mileage listed (3.6 miles) didn't give with my GPS which reported well over 4 miles to the lakes from the parking lot. For us, the trail was 8.35 miles round trip and took 4 hours and 10 minutes. It's a lovely hike, but the first and last parts of the trail are VERY rocky. You can't take a step without hitting a rock. It made for a slow-going trip.

We rode the bus up from Aspen Highlands to Maroon Bells. We were dropped off right at the lake. The views were amazing! We did the 3.6 mile, one-way hike down along the East Maroon Portal. The description of the trail says good for all skill levels, but it was tough in some places. It started off nice enough and then we hit the fields of rocks. It was very slow going, and you had to constantly watch your footing. I was only wearing tennis shoes and the rocks hurt both the bottoms of my feet and eventually made my ankles sore. I am an avid walker, but the ups and downs of this trail were tough. Also, we had only been living in Colorado for a month and the elevation took a toll on our lungs. Near the end of the trail, there are a few steep inclines that we really had to rally to get past. I thought the trail would take an hour and a half or so, but we were walking for nearly 2 1/2 hours. We definitely were moving at a very slow pace due to the rocks and elevation. There were lovely views along the way, so that was nice. This is not a trail for families with small kids because of the loose rocks and inclines.

The drive up to the trail head was lovely with gorgeous scenery and views of Mt. Sopris. That said, be careful if it has rained recently because the road goes from paved to dirt, and it can be quite a mess. It rained a few days ago, and the last 2-3 miles of the drive were terrible. We were sliding all over the road, even with our snow tires on. I wish someone would have mentioned the need for 4 wheel drive. The mud was so thick that we got stuck trying to get out of the parking area. What a mess. We didn't even get to hike the trail because the mud was up to our ankles. I can't wait to go back, but I'll have to be sure the road and trail are dry.
