The All Trails map includes an 8-km walk up (about 100 meters of elevation) the forestry road in the total distance; we walked it as our vehicle wasn’t a 4x4 and the road definitely requires one. But if you have the right wheels you can drive right up to the bottom of the trail significantly reducing the overall distance.

The actual hiking trail is quite steep - 60% incline for much of it, so it earns its difficult rating. Hour plus push thru the trees to the first boulder field, then another 20-30 mins to the second boulder field. Beyond that you start to come out of the trees, into the high alpine - including a small larch forest right at the tarn.

The trail passes the tarn on the left and continues across a long scree fall winding upwards behind the peak up to the ridge and the summit ascent is from the back side. This section is a serious uphill slog and takes about another two plus hours.

The down is also challenging, quite steep with a lot of loose slate even in the trees. This hike will test you, especially if you have to hike the 8-km’s back down the forestry road.

A good day-hike (6+ hours return); be prepared for some snow at higher levels even in mid-June and chilly high winds at the top of the pass.

    Good afternoon hike.

We went beyond the trail end and up the shale wall on the right side to some waterfalls/ice caves - that climb is a good workout. Total time in and out was 3:20 including a 10 minute stop for lunch. Even though it was June we experienced both hail and snow at the trail end and at higher elevations - the glacier seems to produce its own weather; so be prepared.
